"You have leaked your master password to the public putting your account at risk..."That life changing memo from @gtg!"

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

Please do not lose your password because losing your password means losing your account in its entirety and when that happens, there is definitely nothing you can do about it.
Do you know the ultimate rules of Steemit? Steemit has some very simple rules and knowing those rules will help you have a healthy mind mining adventure on this blockchain website.
My account was compromised today and trust me, it wasn't fun!

Steemit has 7 rules and those rules are one and the same and they are:-

  • The first rule of Steemit is: Do not lose your password.
  • The second rule of Steemit is: Do not lose your password.
  • The third rule of Steemit is: We cannot recover your password.
  • The fourth rule: If you can remember the password, it's not secure.
  • The fifth rule: Use only randomly-generated passwords.
  • The sixth rule: Do not tell anyone your password.
  • The seventh rule: Always back up your password.

Those are some simple but strict rule you will say. I cannot agree more and that reality of losing my account dawned on me today.. I know I have been here for sometime and have taken every serious and careful measure one can think of to protect my password, so it was a shocker for me when I got a memo from @gtg.
"You have leaked your master password to the public putting your account at risk. Your keys was changed to prevent further damage. Please use account recovery process to regain your access. Be safe."

My heart sank and I just lost control of my thought. After having started from the bottom and getting to the top, I now have to loose my account?
You can never be too careful especially when you it comes to your usage of the various services that are associated with Steemit.

I would have been thinking about getting another account today and the first thought that came to my mind was how am I going to start all over again? The account value was not even what crossed my mind but the thought of starting all over again and building another reputation from 25 up.

Steemit is a website that gives you that unique opportunity to mine your earnings with your mind and your ability to continually stay ahead in terms of innovation and creativity is what makes it unique and you must make sure to do the best you can to uniquely protect your password.

My advice is that whenever you are getting into any transactions with other affiliate websites, make sure to not allow your password go so easily, make sure to check carefully if the website you are visiting is steemit.com and not some phishing website designed to rip you of your hard earned Steem.
I think it is best to not jump on every website that requests your Master or Active Password, I did in the past but will never do such ever again.
If it isn't Steemit, it can never be Steemit.

Looking at the memos sent out by @gtg, I counted no fewer than 25, and those are the ones he was able to pick out send the alerts. What would have happened if I didn't get the memo like I did?

My account is secured and access given back to me again, and I just want to thank the awesome team at Steemit inc for resetting my password in a very short time and also to @gtg for sending the alert that helped.

@gtg is a Witness and he has been most amazing in helping Steemians not loose their accounts. You can see his recent post about Memos, keys and passwords, Balrogs and Fields of Despair. Be safe. Almost $100k wasn't.

be safe and good looking out for each other steemians

Thank you, being safe is key.

This is interesting. I have some questions that I'm not that clear with.

No. 1) Any idea how you leaked your master password?

No 2) How did gtg know you've leaked this password?

Steemit amazes me every day! You may think no one sees you but they do! This is a social media platform with a huge difference! Wow

  1. No idea, but I am sure it may have happened when I tried using one of these external services and
  2. @gtg is a Steemit witness and IT wizard and he pretty much watches out for Steemians and help prevent these occurrences.
I am just lucky to have my account back, most are not. Be safe and protect your password.

Thanks for the heads up, we all have to be more careful of these unscrupulous elements in our midst.

My Password My Baby😁😁😁😁

Yes it should be. It is your income.

wow. thanks for this. It points to the fact that some of this external services might not be too secure then.

I appreciate the share and heads up

That would have been a nasty thing o

My broda, nasty na small word compared to how nasty it would have been.

Ohooooo, what a relieve ,i thought you would end the story by saying you couldn't recover your PW....because i don't like any other ending, except.....

Thanks. It played out well for me, all thanks to @gtg for the timely heads up and Steemit inc for acting swiftly as well.

Wow..... That wouldn't have been funny, to start again..... That's something that can break someone's spirit

Hehehe, I am glad I am not telling that story.
