SWOT Analysis of Steemit and what does this mean for the Steem Development Team and Us

in #steem6 years ago

Calling all Steemers,

I did some research over the last couple of months and will try to summarize what I believe is the SWOT analysis for our platform - I hope we can all learn from this. Also researched other blockchains

Mostly known to our founders @Dan and @Ned, as well as most of you but I think it is interesting for an outsider to think about it, as other people would think the same and react with potential counter solutions.

Strengths
o First mover advantage – network effects are large, e.g. Synereo not close, Akasha not here, Facebook is losing ground
o Novel business model that resonates well
o Censorship free images/ text/ blogs
o Strong community and development team
o Technological forefront (blockchain/ cryptocurrency)

Weaknesses
o Smaller network than possible centralized copiers/ still fairly small and niche, e.g. Facebook could introduce the same concept
o Skeptics will criticize us that it is not real and all crypto is a scam (Steem)
o Some bad players may post harmful content (partly covered by voting governance)

Opportunities
o Establish as the blogging platform of the public
o Content owned by curators, that could monetize similar to Facebook at some point
o Extend with “Facebook” and other social network functionalities
o Global expansion into all areas

Threats
o Competitive blogging sites copy principle
o Regulation environment changes, e.g. legality for incentives/ Steem
o Community breaks

First of all we need to cherish our strengths and spread the positive word. The more positive high quality content we create the better. If we all contribute I am sure we can make it. For the regulatory threads
Anyone you has knowledge on these specific topics than will help the community. Please share them below.

Sort:

Biggest flaw in the model is that it leads to half the commenters being only fishing for steem rewards. This pollutes the network and pushes off new comers.

Second thing is that curation currently means "guess what's going to be popular" rather than "pick the highest quality content".

Third drawback is that there seems to be no ongoing development, it's been forever since there was any new features here.
