Do you need a niche? - Thoughts on "making it" on Steem

in #steem7 years ago (edited)
Those who appreciate the bluntness that honesty offers might not find my opinion on this subject in the least offensive. I've said plenty of times that life is a collection of transactions, and social interactions are a crucial part of the bigger picture. In this little experiment of ours, niches or at least the beginnings of something we would call a niche, are starting to sprout and this realization has me questioning if we all need urgently to identify our own to fully succeed on this platform.

Niches are important but...

They require a large general population sort of speak. This is to say that eventually or more accurately IF the Steem blockchain grows to gargantuan proportions, Niches will be the organic response to the desired growth. As we stand today the number of daily active users is minuscule when being compared with facebook, reddit or even those social media websites we believed long gone like myspace. (yes they are still around, did you know that?)

As it stands right now most people develop a following for the relationships that they establish with their readers as much as the quality of the content they can produce, and I submit to you that this is almost independent of the niche of operation chosen. A prime example of a steemian who I believe figured out the right way of growing on the platform is @tarazkp and to make my point a little more clear, allow me to present le evidance:

Topic aside (it was pretty intense, but this is not important at the moment) the interaction between the freshly minted noob, me and the prolific minnow (he's a dolphin now) @tarazkp, made me not only follow his account, but also learn about things that I initially had not much interest in. The question becomes, Why would I do that?

Continuing along my "transactional life" reasoning I can conclude that I was sold the idea of becoming his regular reader by becoming curious enough about the mind that produced the sometimes controversial content. It was not the niche and it was certainly not future conversations about child pornography.

But I like my niches @meno, don't you get it?

Yes of course I do, I not only get it I share your affinity for them. The point I'm trying to make is that right now, today and possibly for months to come, they might not be as important as we might think them to be. I am proposing the idea that the effort and focus of a content creator on Steem is probably best spent in other areas like:

  • consistency in posting, no hiatus or lapses
  • developing a relationship with your readers, commenters
  • leaving the comfort of your blog too to reciprocate

I don't know, I may have this completely wrong but there is a method to the madness and at least some anecdotal evidence to back it up. At the size that we are operating in, the relationships we develop are more important than we might give them credit for. If you have not spent time thinking about how to expand your own network, this post and the conversation I hope it sparks might be a call to do so.

Does it really sound that bad? People appreciating and following you for who you are alongside with the content you create. To me this particular aspect of Steem is quite empowering. It reminds me of how social currency works in a none virtual setting and that is something I'm quite comfortable with.

That being said, I'm interested in hearing your thoughts... Are you working on a specific niche? or are you all over the place like me?

Mine's mostly geographical. I've decided that my home city will be Australia's steem hub.
So I already have 1.3 million people in my niche.
I just need to bring them to the platform :)

Yeah this in time will be a total winner for you Matt, it's the only 'niche' you'll need.

As @meno discusses above, particular content can be put aside right now for a decent presentation of self, and if you are collecting these people up from your local area then I can see great things coming your home Town's way :)

well that is a very cool way of looking at it and to be honest with you I think its probably accurate... we are tribal creatures after all, and for all the similarities we may recognize on each other, we are our most comfortable among our kin.

You also would be one to comment on a parallel subject to this one... Do you think famous content creators (im talking big) would ever feel comfortable to make the leap? or do you think we are probably going to never be for "them"... I don't necessarily like othering people, but to make my point its quite necessary.

I believe most celebrities will be here eventually. They'll post and send the payouts to charities. They'll get sick of the trolls elsewhere :)

At least trolls have to purchase some steem to avoid being silenced... That is the silver lining.

;)

They only do it because its free.

There are not trolls here? Lol

This comment is edging toward 'troll-like' :P

Is it twitter tipper day?!

Yes lol. In a few hours :)

@meno we always on the same frequency mate, lol. i wrote a article recently addressing the same kind of thing. Mine was more aimed at how we tend to pigeon hole ourselves (into a niche) and neglect the glaringly obvious other talents we posses, visible when we interact with the community.

My message is free your mind from the cultural conditioning, destroy the shackles and be your autonomous congruent self. Show the world the hidden talents you posses. Having a niche area is fine, however we are more that the sum of those parts.

What i believe is that "niche" mentality , while effective in its ways in the past, is an old school method being plugged into a new technology. I think that in time we will see that people want that human connection that goes beyond the persona presented in a blog, on a screen, etc. which is designed in the "niche". We want that connect to "real people" , not a pedestal image of what a person represents.... i believe in time we will see a shift towards this kind of understanding not only on steemit but beyond and into the real world too.

We are in agreeance but landed the conclusion from different angles... you've been kind of doing whatever comes to mind, right? does it not feel liberating? i think it does...

Yeah totally liberating, im just expressing myself in whatever means i feel like which is congruent with my autonomy, this results in mixed reactions at times, but im just being me and showing who i am as a person... like it or leave it, its of no consequence to me ;)

The key to this is to not worry too much what anyone thinks, but in a good way. I know that when i post about my cat many would think its a "shit post", but those that follow me in the "cat community" appreciate it. When i post about cars i would hazard a guess and say that most of those in the cat community following me dont care about that particular post and may see it as a shit post, but my "Automotive tribes" love it. This can be said for the many topics i write articles about and tid bits that i post.

I have said this many times in the past, "we are not starved for options, we are starved for connection". When we show ourselves in our truest form like minded people gravitate to us and create a bond, "that" is a great part what we seek while experiencing the human condition. Its also what can be found here on steemit and it all begins with convincing ones self that we are free to express ourselves openly and authentically, how we choose to do that is completely up to us. However, we have to recondition ourselves from the Learned Helplessness we have experienced in real life interactions with broken systems and societal norms that prevent us from feeling comfortable in this type of self expression. if you have lived your whole life in a cage being outside of it can seem terrifying.... until you do it.

much love :)

You are a great thinker my friend, I'm happy to have you in my life.

Great minds think alike ;) Very grateful for your presence in my experience of life too my friend, much love in your direction :)

Are you working on a specific niche? or are you all over the place like me?

All over the both place!

I'll niche blog/vlog at utopian/dtube and for specific readers (which is a growth area imo and one minnows should be looking for), but who needs a niche to interact with someone and form an online relationship?

I don't care so much as to the content many of the people i'll support with pat on the back votes, I appreciate their engagement and words.

There is value in finding a niche/community and showing your face to the big accounts, but you need to love that line of content to stick with it. I prefer the scatter-gun approach, we are supposed to be 'free' right?

Cheers!

I agree... The real value of the posted articles most of the time is in the conversations below them.

sage advice and i totally agree, which is why i never had a niche. i talk and have always talked about many things and have developed many relationships. it is wise to also read the material, some people i notice do not read and may say something without fully reading the blog, some of us call that CJ -- if you do not know what that means we can talk about i in discord. Buahahah!!!

I love your artist logo with your name. Groovy!!

Oh thank you for the compliment, as far as the logo goes, @bembelmaniac made it for me. It is neat...

;)

i may need to plead and cry for one too.! :)

hope you are having a great weekend.

Alot of blogging is fairly niche stuff. Some niches are wider and have more splinters or connections off of them. I am still trying to feel out the whole Steemit environment. I have a youtube that is a fairly small niche (ios Music production apps) but I have not really been focusing on that here as I think at least initially on Steemit you have to focus on stuff with a wider appeal (like music/creativity in general). There is not the user base yet to have enough people to make very specific niche groups like you get on Reddit/Facebook. Discord seems to serve that niche group thing fairly well but even so there is alot more going on with more general discord channels than the niche ones. It seems like once you have developed a following/higher rep you can post some more niche subject matter and still get more upvotes than you would expect for something so niche

I guess you are correct in both counts... about discord and about blogging... but on here, at least now, it does not seem to matter too much... specially at the beginning.

I think its also liberating to just write about whatever, share pictures, share songs... its almost as if you dance as if no one is watching, except that they will... but who cares anyways.

My niche is myself. ♥️

BRIX MEME

Lol.

Hahahha I love the image. Btw I tried making the comic strip you see above... Do you think the unicorn was suited for conveying the message?

/me ponders...

;)

I love it. Made mine in canva and used this random meme maker. I'll post the link in the group lol. ;0) ox
