What is your vision of Steem, can you sell it?

in #steem7 years ago

In a Steem world where there isn't any leadership each person is left to understand "What is Steem About?" on their own.

Each member of the community is influenced by how they heard about Steem, what they perceived when they read the White Paper or other articles, who they speak to, what they read, and what they value and/or produce.  Some will constantly update their view while watching how things are developing, while others will hold on to their original view and try to work with others to create that view.  I don't think there is a "Right Way" to approach the Steem economy.

Things it might be:

  • Social Media
  • Blogging Platform
  • A Gift Economy
  • An Education Platform
  • A censorship resistant place to store information
  • A distribution mechanism for Steem
  • An Investment
  • A cryptocurrency discussion platform
  • A reddit style discussion platform
  • Launching pad for Artists
  • An experiment in a decentralised communities

I could go on, but as you can see there are many ways to view the platform and many will argue their view is the real vision.   Personally, I think it can many things to many people.

Frankly, you are getting in the way of me achieving my view of Steem

My current view is we are building an economy fueled on Steem.  I came here for a private version of Social Media where I might also earn a couple of bucks, and I got so much more.

I work in Healthcare Technology, and I have to be careful what I say about the healthcare system any place that my name is attached to my writing.  I thought I would write a lot about that topic.  Yet, I haven't written about it at all and I find I am not interested in writing about it either.

Immediately I got caught up in the experiment of watching a bunch of people with a lot of different agendas trying to figure out how to move this project forward without Centralised Authority.  It is a pretty interesting thing to me, but I have always been interesting in watching human behavior.  I think at this point I feel invested in the Experiment as much as I am invested in the platform itself.

On this day, nothing seems clear to me.  Most days I see the process developing in the debates, fights, commentary on "How things Should Be".

Today, I feel annoyed at your vision (whatever that might be)

My experience says that what I am noticing has more to do with my mood and lack of clarity than the discussions taking place.

Hit me while I am weak.

I've decided to consider everyone else's views today as though I just found Steem and am trying to understand what is happening here.

Just for fun:

Convince me that your vision of Steem is the way to go, make a post or place it in comments.

Describe your perfect vision of Steem.  Sell me why that is the "Right Vision".

This is a fun exercise for those who want to clarify their view or promote the vision they hold.

Sometimes it is nice to have a "Topic" to write about.

I will be sending someone $10 SBDs as a reward for your efforts, a day or two after this post closes.

It's just for fun and to give us both something to write about and spread some Steem around.

I'm fairly certain my answer to this will sound a bit fanboyish, but it's my honest opinion.

Right now I see all of the STEEM ecosystem like a fixer upper house on your first day of moving in. There are holes in the walls, peeling paint, something just skittered across the floor and under the cabinet, your internet isn't installed yet, you're on LTE from your phone, and your mattress is on the floor.

But none of this bothers you because you aren't seeing the house for what it is right now you're seeing the potential of what it will be. So to my point, I think Steem can support all the things you mentioned above and more, but I'll focus on my area which is art.

Looking at all the different platforms being built on the Steem blockchain it really feels like the possibilities are endless. For example, it actually kinda sucks right now to post art on Steemit. The interface just isn't really built for it. For presentation sake you usually want people to see your work at full resolution. Better yet, you'd want it to be nice and big as soon as they open your post, or at the very least to see it as large as their monitor will allow on click. But none of that is how the system works right now, you can re-write the code so that it will take you to a new page with your image at full res on click, but that's not ideal. I'm saying all this to emphasize that someone could simply(I'm sure it's not simple, but I really mean nothing holding anyone back) create an art sharing platform on the Steem blockchain that is specialized for JUST that.

Right now Steemit is wearing a lot of different hats but I don't see that as the future. I think the future will be a ton of niche platforms on the system. I may be wrong, but I think that's why the devs are not as concerned with trying to fix every issue with Steemit, because the future of Steem is not any one platform, it's the whole ecosystem. You will be able to find that right platform that allows you to monetize whatever random shit you're into, plus with the addition of SMT's that will further empower people to have a ton of control over the platforms they build as well as giving them tools for raising money for it in the first place.(I don't work for Steemit Inc. I promise)

Anyway, I could be wrong. On the dark side it could be a super elaborate pyramid scheme, that builds all this up then the biggest holders all power down at the same time and leave us all holding the bag...but I doubt it.

Lmfao! 😂😂😂 I once thought about this...so craaaazy!

I love your POV by the way, mist especially the art part. 💪🏾

Soooo... @whatsup who won???

Right now I see all of the STEEM ecosystem like a fixer upper house on your first day of moving in.

Great analogy @midlet! I love your take on things.

It certainly does sound like a pyramid scheme, the way it was marketed to me.
But unlike any pyramid scheme I have seen, I have made money fairly quickly for doing what I would
consider to be very little.

Who knows where this is all going?

Weeeeell in defense of pyramid schemes everywhere, typically as far as I know the way it would work is everyone is rewarded on a curve weighted to the top, so the more you invest the more you get. The scheme is that people are getting rewarded with all the new/bottom investments, and when that either dries up or can't keep up with the rate of distribution the whole thing falls apart and everyone except the top people get screwed.

So in the end we like to throw around the term "trustless" in the crypto space, but at least in Steem, there is a lot of trust in the top holders. Until there is more, for lack of a better term "wealth diffusion" we're skating on a bit of thin ice.

Haha! I love it and it is close to my own view!

i think he wins.

I think we need to do a better job of helping new users. This is a very complicated platform. I probably would still have one or 2 or maybe 3 or 4 of my followers still around if I would have know how steemit works. Hopefully my next 100 days on steemit will go way better than the first 100.

Hehhehhhe! I can’t wait to start reading different views of people...this should be fun.

At this point I mostly view Steem as an investment platform.

We do have Steemit, which is our social media site, and it has it's ups and downs. I love interacting with people here on a daily basis.

I also love the fact that I can write my fiction stories and people actually read them. I know some of that has to do with the fact that my rep is a decent number, but hey.... foot in the door, right?

Still, I think a social media or writing platform is secondary to what Steem is ultimately going to become.

Steem is easily one of the best coins on the market. I believe so many different things will be built around Steem that there will be an entire multiverse with Steem as the shining Sun in the center of it all.

Therefore.... investment platform.

At this point I mostly view Steem as an investment platform.

No doubt about this!!! Ride on

will be built around Steem that there will be an entire multiverse with Steem as the shining Sun in the center of it all.

Interesting that you used multiverse rather than universe. I suppose that if Communities and SMT’s both really take off, that could well be the case. People in Steem universe 532786 might not even be aware of the existence of Steem universe 85375, let alone what was going on there.

Totally about Investment. Of course I am not an Author or an aspiring Author. So, easy for me to let go of the idea that it has to be about writing a great "anything".

I find it to be about discussion, discovery and engagement. This can be achieved by more people.

I wish we would quit intimidating our new users with all this fuss about what is okay and what isn't.

well said...it is really an investment

Lemme hear that money money money!

Euro, Coins, Currency, Money, Yellow, Market, Europe

Here in Venezuela I don't have to explain much to people about Steemit, very few are interested in the platform itself but in the profits (although they are very low for other countries).

Our minimum salary is around 2-3 $, so you can have an idea, by generating 1.5 sbd you already have the equivalent of one month's work.

So before I start talking about Blockchain, Steem, and decentralization, the people want me to tell them how to "make money". I suppose that in Europe and North America to convince someone should be more complicated.

To be very honest, the profit aspect is the major factor that attracts folks from where I’m from also...Hell, I joined for the profit too.

Like you I am noticing the many different things Steemit can be.

I do not see any 'right' way except maybe to be tolerant of people exploring different paths.
I seem to becoming more tolerant myself.

I LOVE that you use the word Tolerant. I find Freedom and Tolerance go hand in hand. Many Freedom loving people are only tolerant of their own ideas.

For me, it was an alternative to YouTube (DTube) as they had, with a single stroke, removed all of the good people from the platform's money generating program leaving only the crappy few.

I didn't meet their criteria and I would need to upload 8 videos a day just to get back into their good books. Meanwhile the people who caused the issue just got a slap on the wrist and can still make money.

My first video here generated $27. Other videos have generated various amounts, but still so much better than YouTube was ever paying me for my videos and I can upload as many videos as I want without annoying people.

Then again, there is a community of local users using this platform for different things too, so I increased my friend circle very quickly.

As usual, @whatsup, never fail to impress.

I see Steemit as a new economy where we can support those who do good stuff whilst getting something in return. I want to be able to buy music and other things here for SBD/Steem. If people have something to sell then they can build up their accounts.

I can't wait to see some "Market Place" get some traction. I think @beanz was working on a music store once, I am not sure what happened to it.

For me Steemit is a platform where we can express ourselves, no matter what you do, everyone expresses differently, some will make long publications and as an essay, others will make short and summarized publications, others will make publications with only their opinion, it does not matter, this diversity brings more people and keeps it here, there is no strict regulation on what to publish or what is or isn't quality content, because this depends on our perception.

The only thing I don't support (I personally, not what the community should do, only me) is spam, and obviously poor content that seeks to get money blatantly. Steemit offers too much opportunities to benefit in many ways, and there is no need to apply paratism to achieve it, I think that this behavior is unfortunate.

We have flags to combat bad players and bad activities. For now the community is shy about using them, but I think we are getting close. :)
