You know what God wants from us? Our Desire.
We can hear and read so many good words, even as from God, and learn, intellectually, where we are supposed to be in our walk in Him and with Him, but until you make Him your DESIRE - then He can not orchestrate your daily walk to result in the intimate fellowship with Him that you NEED.
So many times I read great advice for believers, but little emphasis on HOW to achieve the results of that advice. The mistake that is made, every time, is to ASSUME that a person can strive of his own power of will to achieve ANYTHING of the righteousness that is in God. We must, instead, ADMIT and CONFESS to God that we can NOT do it our selves, and instead, offer HIM our sincere DESIRE that we do WANT His righteousness.
Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
In that crucial word SEEK is inherent DESIRE, and with the word first, you have the priority level of your seeking, defined. Your first desire is God's Kingdom and His righteousness. It is IMPERATIVE that you know and confess that you can do nothing apart from Christ. Okay, there is another verse extract, that we have not understood. It is literal; you can do no thing unless Christ does it. Who is the Doer? Not you, not me. God does it. David Freeman's writings lately (search his name here) has been all about this business of us STEPPING ASIDE and allowing God to do it.
Can not hear God's voice? Let Him do it.
Can not stop backbiting? Let Him do it.
Can not fill in the blank? Let Him do it.
So what is the key? Acknowledge your shortcoming to your self and to God, and give Him your desire to overcome it.

Let God know, right now, that you want to hear His Voice. Do not rest from giving Him your desire to hear His Voice, until He answers and teaches you Himself. Once you can hear Him, then you know that you and He can communicate at ANY TIME with CERTAINTY. He will teach you and clean up the lies you have believed.
As long as you continue to believe that you can figure things out, read the Bible, and practice of your own will to follow what you determine the Bible says, then God has to allow you to continue to walk in darkness. You can not say that you will change your self and then proceed to continue to do what you have done all along, which was rely on your self, on your own mind which is constantly besieged by the lies of the carnal mind.
God wants your desire. He wants your heart. He wants to sit on the throne of your heart and fight all your battles for you. Teach you and cleanse you of all your unrighteousness, WITH UNDERSTANDING. With understanding, means that you TALK WITH GOD and understand what He teaches you about your self, and you CHOOSE to agree with His views, because you understand. This process is what makes the TRUTH take root in your very being, and eventually transforms your mind and your being into Christ.
Bantying about with your carnal mind over rules and laws and doctrines is a waste of time, and God is not in it. God WAITS for you to GIVE HIM your DESIRE.
The quickest way to get help is to commit yourself to police your thoughts 24/7 while asking GOD to teach you to hear His voice. You can not police your own thoughts; obviously that has not worked, and will NEVER work, because you can do NOTHING apart from Christ.
Start now, and if you forget, just start again as soon as you remember. Remember to ASK GOD to help you police your thoughts. HURRY!
