Bowling Strikes, Birthday Smiles, and Team Spirit

Tonight was a night to remember, as the bonds we’ve built through rugby took centre stage in a setting far removed from the pitch. Coaching my son’s rugby team has been one of the most rewarding experiences, not just for the chance to guide young players but for the camaraderie it’s fostered among the children and their families. Over the past three years, this community has become an extension of family, so organising an annual night of fun and laughter outside of rugby has become a cherished tradition.

This year, we decided to swap rugby balls for bowling balls and headed to the local 10-pin bowling alley for a night of strikes, spares, and plenty of gutter balls. The deal was a steal—two games of bowling and a hearty kids' meal for just £10. The excitement was palpable as the children arrived, siblings and parents in tow, ready for an evening of friendly rivalry and laughter.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, as tomorrow marks my son’s birthday. Being able to intertwine the team night with a mini celebration for him made the evening even more special. Twenty kids, fuelled by bowling adrenaline and a feast of cheeseburgers or chicken nuggets with chips, turned the venue into a hub of joy. The competitive spirit was alive and well, with some kids managing to outplay their parents in the bowling lanes. On the flip side, a few parents took the game far too seriously, proving that a bit of rivalry never really leaves us adults.

The highlight of the evening was seeing the sheer delight on my son’s face. His laughter and grins were constant, whether he was cheering for his friends, celebrating his own bowling feats, or enjoying the birthday attention. For me, as a dad, those smiles are priceless.

As we wrapped up the night, it was clear that this annual event has become a cornerstone of our rugby family’s year. It’s more than just a fun outing; it’s a chance to strengthen the ties that make this group so special. Rugby might bring us together, but it’s these moments off the pitch that truly make us a team.

Here’s to another fantastic year of rugby and friendship—and, of course, happy birthday to my little champ!
