Is it true that you can only earn on a post for 7 days?

Hey everyone, I’m new to steemit and I’m reading that posts can only earn money for up to 7 days. Is this true? Or correct me if I am wrong.

If it is could anyone tell me the reasoning behind this design or maybe point me to a link that goes into this in detail?
