covers some 40 percent of the South American continent and includes parts of eight South American
Amazon biome that covers most of the Amazon basin of South America. This basin encompasses 7,000,000 km2.

While destruction of the Amazon rainforest is ongoing, the overall rate of deforestation rate in the region is slowing, mostly due to to the sharp drop in forest clearing in Brazil since 2004.
