Steemit's Site Performance Could Be Improved Dramatically By Optimizing Images

I've noticed over the past week or so Steemit has become much slower. I've also experienced many "Aw Snaps!" and browser crashes recently in Chrome on Android. Some of that is due to a lack of memory, but Steemit is also slow because of unoptimized images.

The current front page of Steemit.com takes about 4 seconds to load and is about 11MB in size. 87% of that size is images. There are several other small issues that can be improved upon, but I think image optimization is the major one.
