Yes, finding material on Steemit.com can be one of the most frustrating things imaginable. At least for me. However, in the time I've been here, I haven't really seen the interface change with exception of appearance.

I think they are waiting for a user or users to come up and produce something better for them. However, I am not the person with the type of knowledge to do that. So... Here is to hoping someone else does!
