Steemit Tips #7 - Helping New Users on Steemit - Are You a Giver or a Taker?

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

If you've followed my blog for a bit, you may have noticed I like to help out new users on Steemit. While I'm no expert, I've learned a few things during my time here and as a blogger before I signed up. Dropping into chat or welcoming members are examples of things we can do to give back to the community.

Did someone write a killer post with no votes or views? Drop a big, fat, juicy upvote on it and resteem that puppy! Everyone has awesome potential inside of them, we need to lift our brothers and sisters up on this platform to get that gooey goodness out!

Part of the problem is that after we've been here long enough we tend to forget what it was like to be new. Remember when you first joined? How chaotic and confusing everything seemed? You may be an expert on Steemit Chat and Discord now, but you sure as hell weren't at the start. Discord is a confusing, busy, clunky mess. I don't even bother sending new people there, I try to ease them into chat first.

The point is, if you're no longer "new" it’s time to start giving back. It’s a great way of "paying it forward" and it really feels good. Some of the people I've connected with were complete strangers I met after offering a bit of advice or words of encouragement. If you see a need, fill it. Give, and it will come back to you in waves. Let's all help each other grow and prosper on Steemit.

You're bringing the good stuff again. Yeah, it's important to keep sharing what you learn because someone else who is new can go farther, faster if they get help. And that benefits all of us.

Thank You. I wish I could do more, but free time is sparse for me. I just read your excellent post on bidbots and after I tested them out myself Dec-Jan, came to a similar conclusion. So I'm sitting here in a Burger King in PA listening to some Grateful Dead and just took a couple hours to create this post. It would have been longer, but again, time. Better to get something out, than write War and Peace. :)

Glad you liked it. Also encouraged to hear you had similar results and I wasn't just wildly off base.

You know: blog post, War and Peace, Sense and Sensibility. They're all good. :D

I have helped and been helped along the way here on Steemit. Sometimes all I can give is guidance and advice. I have seen newbies (at the time) pass me in SP and reputation! I am not hating but I like it because now they are helping me more than I ever helped them!

Ain't that the truth? I've seen several "25's" that I helped, who put out so much excellent content that they now equal or surpass my rep. That's great for Steemit and just warms my heart! :)

I just started here and the people I have met have been incredible in lending their advice and guidance. It's definitely encouraging. I'm excited to get to a place where I can pay it forward.

So happy you joined! Let's help build this thing!

You are in my "Hall of fame" for helping and guiding my first steps. And I will always appreciate the advice that you gave me.

:) And you are the number 1 Steemian in Bosnia and Herzegovina! Keep going!

At what point would you consider someone to not be new?

That's a great question. Let's say you started an account in Jan 2017, but you've only posted twice and know next to nothing about Steemit. Even though you've been on the platform for a year, some would consider you new due to your lack of knowledge and participation.

Or, you're here since Nov 2017, but you've read up everything you can about Steemit, you're posting regularly and helping out new people. Some would say you're no longer new. See what I mean?

Right but I guess I meant more from a reputation or STEEM POWER level?

It depends on how you reached your rep level. I've seen brand-new people with a "25" next to their name, get lots of upvotes from Whales quickly. This jacks up their reputation number, yet since they are still new to the platform it doesn't mean much. This is why we look at the whole picture to determine the "newness" of a blogger.

It feels really good to give than receive. Am glad that your derive satisfaction in helping newbies. Well done!

A day without a good deed is a lost day. Let's not lose any. :)

I like giving back. I do upvote my own posts but very rarely mnt comments as the remaindee if my VP goes to upvoting underappreciated steemians. I'm also glad to Steemit.chat back online. I wasn't sure if it was coming back.

Happy to continue to pay it forward. Happy steeming.

Nothing feels better. I love it when success finds people and won't let go!

Hard work and continual effort wins every time. 😁

I am new and am constantly being referred to using Discord. I can't figure the damn thing out. So, I thank you for pointing that out :)

What is Discord?? Is it good or bed?? 🤔

It's a messenger app, advertised for gamers but a lot of people here use it.

I'm sure it's not bad, I don't know much about it. I created an account to contact a few people on here and so far I just haven't used it, though, because I find it confusing.

Thanks a lot 😊 What kind of messenger? Something like viber, mesesnger, whats up, telegram ... or ?? And where to find it, how to install it, does it have it on google play ?? And thaaaanks to you 😊😊😊😁

I don't really know that much about it. If you'd like to look into it here's the website
