A team of the Antarctic Heritage Fund in New Zealand found a 100-year-old fruit cake in the Cape Adare hut, the oldest exploration building on Antarctica, the Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.
Although the tin wrapped in the candy appears to be in a sorry state, the fruit cake looks edible and tasty and has no smells!
The dessert belongs to the British explorer Robert Falcon, who brought it to the Antarctic during the expedition from 1910 to 1913, and the cake from the British biscuit industry Huntley & Palmers.
The Terra Nova mission was built in the Cape Adare hut, built by the Norwegian Carsten Borschgreifink in 1899. Falcon arrived at the cottage with his 4-member crew to the South Pole in 1912. However, the team members all died during the return journey to the research base.
The researchers were able to find the fruit cake in the hut during excavations and search for ancient artifacts in the cottage that began in 2016. This type of cake is very common in Britain to this day.
