STEEMIT is not the same as Facebook!
I see a lot of posts comparing Steemit and Facebook.
Steemit and Facebook for me, are not the same at all. It has almost nothing in common except for both being social media platforms. The reason why I am saying this is that people use this comparison to get people to come unto Steemit. They say: you do the same as what you would do on Facebook and you get paid for it.
Facebook for me was something I did to relax. At night before sleeping I would browse through my news feed, quickly scanning my friends and families posts. I could like posts and comment if I wanted to. It was the place where I stay up to date with my friends and family lives. A place where you share your good times and bad times. I do not experience Steemit like this. My followers are some people that maybe interested in my content or not. A few times I post more personal stuff, like for example photos of my grandkids, there was not a lot of response, except for a few people who I think, although not knowing them, I did manage to make some connection with.
Although Steemit is a very friendly environment, it is not your family and friends. Maybe you will make real friends along the way, as good as friends you can become on the internet without meeting these friends. I am all for making new friends on the internet, I met my hubby initially in an internet chatroom.
Steemit's community is whole new ball game. The community is much more professional than your family and friends on Facebook. Lots of people that are very popular on Facebook maybe won't make it on steemit. If you come for the rewards and you are not rewarded, you will run out of steem, sooner or later.
Don't get me wrong, since the first day I loved Steemit. My hubby and I, even went through the nite and we saw the sun coming up. I am very grateful to @giantbeer that invited me to steemit. She did not say it was the same as Facebook. She only said that you can make extra money. Well today about 5 weeks later I have made a little bit more than 100 dollars.
That means a lot to me, as the South African economy is in a recession. It was announced last week in the news. If more South African people can make money on steemit it can even boost the local economy. We have more than 17 million people that can't find work. That may be very well a big contributing factor to the very high crime rate. Although there is no justification for the killing of our people, I can ask myself the question that if I had no work, and no means to make an income, would I not start stealing to feed my children?
The biggest difference between Steemit and Facebook of course, is that you can make money on Steemit through your posts or your curation.
Being able to make money has the following consequences:
it is now not only interacting with other people, it becomes like a job.
because you are treating it like a job, you spend much more time on researching and creating posts.
you spend a lot of time reading other people's posts, as if your want people to upvote your content, they expect you to do the same for them if they put up quality content.
Steemit is very different from Facebook to me, Facebook was just social media. Steemit is a challenge, it is stimulating new ideas and new thoughts. I tried to start some pages on Facebook like Love, God's gift and although a few people were interested I could not really get enough interest. Here on Steemit I start the blog Love and marriage and there are more people upvoting it than I ever could get involved on Facebook in 7 years and top of all I earn a little bit of money on it. I have dreams that it will become bigger. Steemit's very clever community teaches me new things I did not know about every day. This is very stimulating and is definitely contributing to my personal growth. So even if it takes much more of my time, I do not care, I will keep on steeming!
.
I am just a minnow here on Steemit, but there you have my mouthful about the difference between Steemit and Facebook.

I apologize if there are grammar faults as English is not my native language. I am an Afrikaans speaking South-African.
Thank you for reading, I would love to hear what you think.
@hope777 ~ you are 100% right, in my humble opinion. lol ~ I am guilty of being one that has told others it's similar to facebook ~ but now that I have read your very thoughtful and observational post - I couldn't agree more with your analysis.

Although I might not totally agree with you about Facebook, thank you for your kind comment, it motivates me. Appreciate your upvote!
It is refreshing to see someone enlightened enough to not let difference of opinion stand in the way of acknowledged support. Thank You! I stand by my comment, but respect your blog and the work you are doing on here..... Yay steemians!
Thank you for your comment, really appreciate it. I am following you now. hehe if we could all agree we could have been one big world state.
It's awesome to feel the fresh air in this community. There is so much passion and drive as well as collaborative thinking. Here's to the future of social media, run by and for the people. We are the media!
I was comparing Steemit to Facebook for a while. Then my mom and aunt started discussing making an account. It got me to thinking about what they would post about. The two are not writers, meme creators, or photographers. They are more of the type to post pictures of their grandchildren, share a link to a recipe, possibly pin point their location or chat live. Would they be able to post thier content? Sure. Would they receive the same type or quantity of engagement they do on Facebook? MMM...probably not at this current point. Now, if their whole facebook tribe transitioned, it could work. But in reality, it would be a very small community engaging with each other and completely different from the current Steemit experience.
