Why and How Do I Reward "Proof of Effort" and Encourage Healthy Engagement on Steemit?

in #steemit7 years ago

Hi Steemians,

Before I come to the topic, there's a short story from Steemit that I would like to share with you. I woke up today to see a gift of 5 Steem from @inquiringtimes (thank you!). The memo read:-

Thank you for participating in the welcoming efforts

I had done nothing directly to receive it. There was a competition for finding how-to guides and tutorials which would be helpful for new users and thus welcome them to Steemit. I found out, using the eSteem app, that I had been mentioned by many participants in their comments.

They didn't mention me though. They mentioned my work; my guides which welcome new Steemians to the platform and guide them about setting up profile, understanding reward system and learning all the good things about Steemit. The gift I received was reward of the efforts I have done since my early days to educate newbies.

In my opinion and experience, no effort goes unrewarded. It may temporarily be ignored or even ridiculed but effort over a significant period of time always gets rewarded. My efforts on Steemit have always been rewarded. Not all of them, not the way I wanted them to but over the last [6 months], the total time I have been of Steemit, I have seen my efforts rewarded in multiple ways.

"Proof of Effort"

What is an effort and how to prove that it had been made? An effort is where a person spends time, energy and willpower etc. to complete a task or, at least, try to do so. For example, a person who reads this post and then posts a relevant, detailed comment under it has made an effort.

In the above example, his comment is the proof of his effort. Comments are very important on Steemit. You may have seen some comments get rewarded, some ignoref and others flagged. What causes any of these reactions? The answer is; proof of effort!.

People evaluate our efforts. If they don't see an effort in a post or a comment, they simply ignore it. If they see an effort to spam, malign, scam or game the system or people, they flag such a dishonest effort. If they see some value in that effort, it gets rewarded.

How do I Reward Proof of Effort?

Firstly, I reward an effort because it should be rewarded. It is rude and irresponsible not to reward a valuable effort; especially here on Steemit where people expect the community to reward their efforts. I see a detailed comment on my post as a valuable effort and I always try to reward it.

I rewarded good comments by upvoting when I was a newbie. I rewarded when my upvote became worth $0.12 in June/July. I reward effort of people who read my content and care enough to comment on it. The only difference is that my upvote is worth $0.65 now after purchasing some delegation.

Scrollshot of Replies tab on my profile. Whenever I get time, I try to upvote replies as per the value they create.

PS: My upvote will be worth more than $1.7 when my next delegation request gets filled. I hope it happens soon so that I can reward more people, rather more efforts.

Encouraging Healthy Engagement

Engagement is key to success of any thriving community; for example Steemit. Healthy engagement means people engaging with each in such a way that something good happens. Some good things that stem from healthy engagement on Steemit or in life are:-

  • Good relationships.
  • New friends.
  • Evolution of ideas.
  • Constructive feedback.
  • Lot of learning and education.

And a lot more. Healthy engagement on Steemit can do wonders for your blog as well as rewards. Learning how to engage with other Steemians is not only essential, but also the only way to survive and thrive on this platform.

I always try to reply to each and every human reply I receive on my content. In the early days, my score was 99 %. Now, things get in way and some comments may go unnoticed. But you won't see a host of replies on my content go unanswered for days and weeks.

Another scrollshot.

That's my way of encouraging healthy engagement. Many people from Steemit have become my regular friends and I have a headache how to upvote all the replies without depleting my voting power and decresing the worth of my upvote.

I also share insights, ideas, educational posts and community initiatives to encourage engagement, communication and healthy interaction.

Conclusion

My principles on Steemit are simple. You can find them incorporated in my blog's introductory line.

"I love Steemit, upvote good comments, encourage good interaction, and teach good things about Steemit. Follow to be connected."

My message for you is also simple. Love Steemit. Reward people who comment on your posts. Encourage healthy interaction. Learn and share good things.

Please consider resteeming and upvoting.

Sort:

You know i have seen all sorts of people on steemit such as:-

  1. Please upvote me kind
  2. Posting 1 picture and getting 100$ payout on it kind
  3. Posting spam comments in other blogs
  4. Whales who feed themselves
  5. People abusing minnow support project while having 7k followers and 0.4 million SP
  6. People who post their analysis on cryptos and nothing else

Long story short, i have seen'em all.. yet there are very few steemians who truly are a reflection of what steemit was built for.. and you my friend are one of those few people.
This post speaks for itself that you believe in and promote what Steemit stands for..
Best wishes..

Thank you so much! I have seen them all too. And some more types too. And I don't want to be like them.

The people I wish to be like are @kus-knee, @dragosroua, @good-karma, @surpassinggoogle, @lukestokes, @littleboy, @anomadsoul and many many more.

Follow them to know why I say good things about them.

All of them, and many more, are true assets of Steemit in their own ways.

There is this teaching from our Lord and Savior Jesus which is related to points that you just depicted here about ‘proof of effort’ and good comments in steemit, permit me to put it down here.

John 4:37-38
And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

One can actually reap a good measure of reward from another man’s labor in steemit by simply engaging positively, I am a living witness, because of the nature of what I post on my blog (gospel) most times it doesn’t yield much reward because I perceived that majority of our world population doesn’t fancy gospel messages, but nevertheless, I found out commenting positively on other people’s posts pays, not only that it pays, it promotes friendship and recognition!

Let me stop here.

Thanks for sharing this @ilyastarar

I remain a friend @maxdevalue.

You are a friend at heart indeed. People may not fancy gospel messages but they are our roots. The best of values come from gospels. Quran has a very clear message about effort. It's undeniable and the ultimate truth.

"And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives" (Quran, An-Najm 53: Verse 39)

Comments are important. I linked to a post in this article in which I explained why comments can be more rewarding, and in more ways. And here's a proof from your own comment.

  • I found out commenting positively on other people’s posts pays, not only that it pays, it promotes friendship and recognition!*

Your comments got recognition and reward. Furthermore, I had followed you after your first comment and I look forward to interacting more.

Masha Allah:
No doubt about I have learned alot new things from you. I want to highlight here!
1- You always tell us Quality now I am focusing on Quality Content rather than Quantity.

2- I have learned hard work from you.

3- Comment Comment Comment.
4- You always Share Excellent work with Steemit Community.
5- You highlight mistakes for Correction.
Thanks brother for your Continuous Guidance.
I salute your great efforts @ilysstarar.

Thank you so much for your excellent feedback. It is encouraging. I always appreciate you for being consistent. But the best thing you have done is to bring more and more people to Steemit.

This is a really considerate post and I like your style. I agree, anyone makes that extra effort is deserving. I don't like negativity, ranting posts and people making profit out of drama. I'm upvoting and resteeming this

Thank you so much for your appreciation. Thank you for the upvote and resteem.

I agree. It's not about being famous on here, just real people sharing their knowledge with each other and hopefully forming lasting friendships. I see steemit as a place for people to connect and prosper together as a community. I'm waiting on sp delegation as well so I can help spread the love too. 😄💜

Good luck for the delegation and I wish more power to be in the hands of good people. People go to SteemFests and talk over phone and meet others' families. Old Steemians do that. New ones will do it too because Steemit is such a beautiful place.

1st Question

The owner of wikipedia likes money just like any one of us in this planet but do you know that Wikipedia as a site has never been monetized?

My second

Have you ever imagined how much he will be making per month if he chooses to monetize it using google ads?

My conclusion

Its not always about the money
Seek to add value to human life and existence and in the long run all other things will follow
Finally, this your article is just on point and I think everybody should read it
Thanks for sharing this thoughtful article
I hope to use it to change the perceptions of steemians

Seek to add value.

What a beautiful line by you! Thank you for such a wonderful comment and perspective on money vs value creation.

Always happy to change human perception to the right perspective
Thanks to you for the post

Keep being great. You'll soon be recognized for your efforts.

Very well said. For me the quality content is important. I apreciate the real work for writing an post, no just copy paste. I also write many posts, but as a "new" steemit user is hard to show other people your content. Anyway, yo`re doing a great job here !! :)

Thank you. I was just like you when there was no one looking at my content. I just kept going despite the bitter feelings. It paid off. People started finding me and voting for me.

Please keep going. Or in Steemit terminology, Steem on!

Thank you for the motivation !! :)

Hi friend. I agree with this. I think Steemit is about being genuinely interested in other people, supporting them and somehow you find yourself growing. Good work.

Thank you so much for coming here and sharing your valuable opinion. Steemit indeed is about being genuinely concerned about other people.

Agreed. Thanks.

Hi @ilystarar. I like the article. You are right about creating "healthy engagement" being an important part of Steemit. Providing constructive feedback and your own thoughts is something that should be rewarded, and I'm glad that the Steemit platform supports this.

Also, congratulations on your reward! That's exciting.

Brother @ilyastarar your efforts for newbies are remarkable, we learns a lot from your posts, your success on steemit reflects your hard work, keep going on.

Thank you much for the appreciation. Keep working hard bro.
