Following back, spam comments and... OK, dear new steemians, it doesn't work like that!

in #steemit7 years ago

A few days ago @steevc wrote a post like this, and I already thought that I will not do it myself, but damn, I have to say it aloud!

I check out my personal feed (aka home) and general feed of steemit every day, and I vote for posts that I think are interesting.  I also have a list of bloggers who ALWAYS have my upvote with help of steemvoter, cause I know that they ALWAYS create good content and I don't want to miss it. And I follow people who write interesting posts, interesting for me.

I don't do "follow for follow". Guys, that's not how steemit works!

I'm especially "happy" when I see someone saying "Why don't you want to give something that took you yourself no effort to receive". Damn, REALLY?

  • Point one.I'm here on steemit for five months,  and for these five months I'm posting EVERY DAY. It's close to half year of everyday work. Yes, sometimes I do posts about my dog or about my life, some bloggy stuff, but in general I try to do my best in making my blog interesting. I write posts about artists, try ti remember and collect interesting information and analyze it. If I post my art - be sure, behind each piece there're hours of work. If that's "no effort" - OK, then I don't know what's an effort enough for blogging.

  • If I'll follow everyone who asks me about it it will end up with missing great posts from my friends here, Even if I will - what will it change? My "Home" feed will just explode, and I'll have no opportunity to upvote anyway.  I check out general feed really regularly. And believe me, I notice interesting posts.

  • Next point. Attacking me in steemit chat. Just throwing me a link and a postscript "Upvote and follow"! Dude! At least say "HI"!!! Usually I use steemit chat to... chat with friends and to discuss art commissions. And that's it. Not to receive  a random link on a post about a lipstick  (true story), with some random writing. That you a lot, my lips are tattooed! So I don't need a lipstick and a link to a post about it. I ALWAYS react if someone I know asks me to check out the post, or something like that, but for first I need to know the person, or at least the post must match my interests, they're pretty clear from my blog. Art posts, MMORPG graphic, geeky series - no lipstick, please.

  • Next point! What's wrong with people who write "Nice post, please check out mine" or "I followed and upvoted you, please do the same" under the posts that are... Hm... Under posts about diseases, or lost of beloved animals (seen that), or any other content that is not about "Nice posting"? I have two versions of what's going on. Either they don't read it at all (then it's spamming), or they're dangerous sociopaths. Something like that. It really pisses me off.

OK, may be I'm overreacting. But anyway, dear new steemians, it doesn't work like this!

I am a newbie ( no even one week) . I realize already the quantity of followers is not important but is the quality!. Follow to follow doesn't work for me because what the point if u have 200 followers and only 15 upvotes per post...( i see a few ones here). Lets be honest most of people ARE here for easy money.. thats why they gonna fail.. i dont mind take 2 or 3 moths to get 100 followers but if half upvote my posts like is happening now i will be happy!!! Also i am only following people with similiar blogs and interests.. its just make sense that trading posts and information can also help me growing on steemit.. and everyone won!!! Best regards !!!!

You're right, I act exactly the same. Following blogs with endless selfie's are no interest for me, but if I see good and interesting content - I'll definitely follow:)

Quality always supercedes quantity. The trick is to find the intersection of both, and that's how you can turn Steemit into a method of self-sufficiency. I've been here for almost a year and I'm not there yet, but I'm working on it :D

We all do. That's the only way to go - you improve yourself, and other do it with you. I'm also not there yet, but I'm trying. And as it's said in my country "If you put enough effort you can fly to space" (in my native it's rhymed, ha-ha:)

eggzackerly right...you want followers of quality... the type that don't give up,..don't cry and whine. You want the kind of followers who will GROW in a few months they will have the POWAH..steem power that is...and when they vote for you it will have THRO WEIGHT...cultivate your followers..help them grow to be whales.
that's the 'get rich scheme' on Stemmit.

Indeed!!!!!😀 best regards!

I'm not "against" helping to grow, I'm "for" it. But one upvote will not change anything. I resteem if I see something interesting, but following everyone... I'm not sure I want my feed full of something I'm not interested in

you've got it exactly right
upvote and follow those that you are interested in.
Period. Dot. End of discussion.
It's up to YOU....and don't let them shame you by say BS about community
community is socialism...the absolute opposite of decentralized.
Steemit is decentralized...you, as an individual, can do as you damn well please.
Keep in mind that there are ALWAYS consequences. Either from the doing, or the NOT doing.

Steemit chat direct messages are the worst for me. Maybe flagging people who such things will no longer make it a thing.

I'm already close to it.

I totally agree with this post. I've seen so many copy+paste comments lately, and it's really beginning to become annoying. The ones I dislike the most are the people who PM on steem.chat like you said, just posting their links and write "comment and follow plz". No, I'm not gonna do that if they can't even write a few words first.

Right! No "Hi", not a word!

The ones that really get me are when I write a post about not follow begging, and I get legitimate follow beggars. The ironic ones are groaning-funny, but the authentic beggars are just offensives to me.

Feel the same as you do. Even when I wrote this one I got a follow beggar on the previous one

Yep, people need to learn that when they are commenting on a post they are suppose to be giving their thoughts or opinions but saying "hey follow me" adds no value and instead angers the author. Giving real thoughtful equals more followers then spamming.

Indeed! And this is how it really works:)

I agree. I like when the people kind of interesting me about their blog and themselves then I am getting curious to check it out. The new steemians have excellent ideas and great posts but sometimes they screw up of being so in rush or push it. A lot of times happens that great shots or paints drew my attention so I jump in the post right way. I don't like spam. I wish you great steemian community 🤗 Very good one post full good advices. You did great. Up our and resteem.

Thank you for stopping by:) I also check out and jump to the posts, but I think I'll never do it again with spammers

That's what I said so I don't like spam. I stay away from them. It is obvious to say what we think and how do we feel. 🤗

I think a made a similar comment in another post about the same topic. Part of the issue is that a lot of people do not have social skills. They aproach online interactions the same way they do it with their personal lives. Instead of having a real conversation they are blunt and superficial.
It's more likley that you will gain a new friend if you show interest in what someone else is saying or in our case what they wrote about.

I'm the one with no social skills in real life:) Well, almost none - it's just I'm too shy at first, and sometimes it looks like being rude. But on-line I feel more freely. For example it's much more easy for me to write a nice comment under the post and ask a person about something he/she wrote about then to stop someone in the street and do the same, ha-ha:)

I totally get what you are saying.

Well said! Steemit was bound to attract this sort of user, but we can show them that's not going to gain them much. Persistent spammers will get flagged. It's up to us to moderate

I don't think I'm powerful enough for moderation, anyway I'm afraid to flag people:) But I'm good at muting:)

No, you're not overreacting. It's called "vote/follow bartering", and it doesn't fly here very well. The people doing it are either new or bots. I'm betting a good blend of both.

Sending someone an unsolicited private message with no intention of being human to the person you're messaging is spam. It's no different than knocking on someone's front door, making them get up out of their comfy chair, only to throw a business card in their face and run away once they open the door.

I imagined that:) About IRL;) Still laughing - have a good imagination;)
