I've had the same thing happen to me in the past (in terms of followers). It just makes the number bigger (and prettier if you're in to that sort of thing).
A lot of apathetic users simply mining for Steem using automated means. The community here, for the most part, generally cares more about the token than the end user. It's kind of sad since most ordinary folks just get buried underneath this automation.
