Victims of Centralization: FaceBook Feeding WhatsApp Users to Advertisers ..

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

So you found this cool little app ..

I remember when I first used WhatsApp .. thought it was great, and it 'was' - nice design, fast, superior user experience to standard SMS, easy to connect with those you know, and reconnect.

But then .. Facebook bought them, back in 2014 for ... whaaat!? ..

Facebook Closes $19 Billion WhatsApp Deal

WhatsApp locates/identifies users with their current phone number and drags in as many people in your Contacts list as they possibly can, and networks you together with those who have your digits, and the digits of others you possess .. this is a marketers dream! First, they have a means to 'get to you', and when they do, they can be confident that you are a unique individual, who can be roughly demographied, using Facebook data .. because of course, this is all also connected to your Facebook account.

The Wait is Over .. time to recoup that 19 Billion!

This was not something that Facebook could do right away of course, they needed to on-board a billion people first, and there would have been outcries and a lot of app deletions if they tried to sell their users to big business, in the first year or so after the purchase ... well, now the time has come!

Facebook furthers WhatsApp monetization efforts with verified business pilot

When they start saying things like ...

You know you are about to be fed to the wolves! :-)

Lessons ..

So you get a cool little piece of "free" tech .. yay! All it will cost you is your privacy and your piece of mind! This is the modus operandi of centralized, information-based businesses .. you are the commodity, you are the target, you are the content. The differences between what we are doing with STEEM, and the many other existing, and soon to be existing decentralized options and ventures, is to give people full control of who they are, what they produce, to reap the full benefits of both, and retain that, or choose to reinvest it.

Our enemy is anyone who wishes to own your thought. The tides are turning in this epic struggle, and as 'we know', the victory is inevitable .. so .. just evangelize, evangelize, evangelize, and do not forget to make a shit tonne of money along the way!

WhatsApp was definitely my favourite messaging service at first. Being able to call and connect to friends for pretty much free was really useful and nearly everyone had it.

However as you have outlined the main downfall of whatsapp was it being bought by facebook and now they have this huge void to fill and what better than breaching millions of peoples privacy for their own monetary gain.

I can't wait until the day where everything is based off the blockchain and we can have a more equal, distributed and safe future @kurtbeil

@kurtbeil - Yes, Sir it 'was'
'it 'was' - nice design, fast, superior user experience to standard SMS, easy to connect with those you know, and reconnect.'
FB made it worst & now I'm out of it. Love your work Sir. Therefore, I wish to ReSteem your post.

@kurtbeil,
FB and most of other companies are acquiring such great concepts for millions or billions of $$$! That's what they do and at the end they earn trillions of $$$! That's what we call as great business minds and concepts! Thanks for sharing such great post with us!

Great article! I am so glad we don't need those centralized platforms anymore since we have blockchain based alternatives such as Steemit and onG Social. More and more people are becoming aware of it, so I am fairly optimistic.

Totally agree with you. Steemit and Ongsocial have been a revolution. Future looks exciting

I agree. By the way ong still has their ICO going on. Only one week left so get on board still while you can with a good price!
