Epic Games’ Fortnite is making boatloads of money on in-app purchases, taking in $126 million in the month of February and surpassing the monthly revenue pull of competitor Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds for the first time, according to game analytics firm Superdata Research. The news should come as no surprise to those who’ve been following the meteoric trajectory of Fortnite and its popular battle royale-style game mode, which puts up to 100 players against one another on a deserted island in a last-person-standing contest.

Fortnite Battle Royale has officially reached craze status, showing up everywhere from vaguely concerned special reports on Good Morning America to meme-y March Madness tweets. As a free-to-play game, however, downloads and players don't translate directly into sales -- players have to spend money on in-game cosmetic items for developer Epic Games to make a profit. A new report from SuperData estimates that people are indeed doing that in droves, and also that Fortnite has now surpassed chief rival PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.
Superdata estimates that Fortnite Battle Royale beat PUBG in terms of total revenue in February with $126 million compared to PUBG's $103 million, though it's unclear how Superdata arrived at those numbers. But despite the similar gameplay, there are some important differences on who can play these games and how they pay for them. Fortnite is free-to-play across PS4, Xbox One and PC, and is currently in a pilot program on iOS with Android to follow. PUBG is a $29.99 purchase on PC and Xbox One, with no PS4 version and a free-to-play mobile version that's been out in China for months and just saw a wide international release earlier this week.
Fortnite has handily surpassed PUBG in terms of some important engagement metrics like total Twitch viewers -- at the time of this writing, Fortnite has about 178,000 viewers to PUBG's 84,000.
