My Childhood Fairy Tale

In our life, there will always be some fairy tales that grow with us during our childhood time… The first ever cartoon appeared in my life was Mickey Mouse - a funny animal cartoon character and the mascot of The Walt Disney Company. I like Mickey Mouse a lot, but I have never look into its transformation before… So today, let’s us review the birth of the world’s superstar together.

Mickey Mouse was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks at the Walt Disney Studio in 1928. He was first seen in a cartoon called “Plane Crazy”, an American animated black-and-white and silent film which released on May 15, 1928. During that time, the design of Mickey Mouse was really looked like the real mice.

After this first cartoon, the second silent cartoon featuring Mickey Mouse “The Gallopin’ Gaucho” was produced. Later that year, Disney released Mickey’s first sound cartoon, “Steamboat Willie” on November 18, 1928. It was an enormous success for Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks and Mickey began to gain popularity that he has today. In “Steamboat Willie”, Mickey Mouse was looked more adorable compared to his first seen in “Plane Crazy”.

After years of black-and-white feature of cartoon, Mickey has finally appeared animated in colour officially in “The Band Concert” in 1935. Meanwhile, Mickey was being redesigned and given a new look. His body was turned from round to pear-shaped, his nose was became shorter, his ears were changed from round to oval, at the same time, he was given white eyes with pupils and a Caucasian coloured face.

In the 40’s, he was appeared with another appearance in which he has lost his tail, got more realistic ears that changed with perspective and a different body anatomy. In 1950s, Mickey was given eyebrows in his redesign until the late 1960s and rarely in the early 1990s. Thereafter, his eyebrows have since been removed. Nevertheless, it doesn’t affect much on his good looking face.

For over 89 years of history, it definitely has a lot of ups and downs, high and low, good and bad for Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks and even Walt Disney Company to produce, maintain and revolute this superstar, Mickey Mouse and make it be one of the world’s most recognizable characters!
