My thoughts after getting a $100 comment, and my way of giving back to the community!

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Long story short - I posted a comment, some misunderstanding happened, @neoxian came to the rescue, and I ended up getting upvoted by a couple of whales on my comment. If you're interested in the full story, you can read it here.

I will be giving away 30 STEEM to celebrate this minor victory for us minnows. More info on the giveaway is at the bottom of the post.

Moving on...

I made $100 with one comment! To be honest, I haven't been too bothered with my lack of posting success, even though I've made more with this one comment than all of my other posts combined. I spend at least 2 hours writing each post I've done on Steemit so far (except for my introduction post), and just 5 minutes on this one comment.

This one event really made me appreciate the potential that Steemit has, and reaffirmed my confidence in it.

Here's what I think of all this...

It is very encouraging, both as a new writer and minnow on the Steem platform, and as a future investor since I intend to buy myself some Steem whenever I'm back home from my travels.

My thoughts as a minnow

As a writer and new user, it's encouraging to see whales behave like that, by supporting minnows like myself. Sure, it might be in their interests to do things like this. You could argue that it's strongly in their interests to support new users to keep them on the platform. Since the growth of Steemit also means a growth in their stake and power.

However, they could also just not give a shit, keep voting for themselves only and let minnows fend for themselves. Not all minnows will fail without support, after all. Truly exceptional ones or those that just got really lucky would still make it, and Steemit will still grow.

So the fact that whales like @neoxian and @kingscrown are so supportive of newcomers really fills me with a lot of confidence and motivation as a new writer and user of Steemit. Where good content is rewarded, and even your comments can fuel your journey forward, while you hone your writing/photography/artistic/musical skills and continue to post and share with the rest of the community.

My thoughts as an investor (in the near future)

As an investor, I'm not used to seeing these kind of returns on my investments in such a short period.

When I invest in Steem, I will immediately be able to see my returns in the form of voting power and increased influence within the Steemit community. This will enable me to play a more active and rewarding role in the community.

Of course, no investment is ever risk-free. I would still stand to lose money if the price of Steem goes down, but it's interesting that I'll be able to play a more active part in growing the userbase of Steemit directly from my actions. Also, being invested would make a more compelling case when trying to convince new users to join Steemit.

My way of giving back to the community

$100 is a lot of money! I want to celebrate this minor victory by sharing some of it with my fellow minnows. Let's play a simple game while we're at it. I feel as powerful as this money doge right now.

I will be giving away 10 STEEM each to 3 of my fellow minnows. That's more than 50% of what I earned from this comment!

You need to share any comment of yours that made the biggest reward, and the top 3 biggest comment payouts will win the 10 STEEM. Here's the full list of requirements:

  • Comment with a screenshot and link to your highest paid comment
  • Account age of less than 3 months
  • SP value less than 500
  • Upvote this post (so more minnows can try for the giveaway!)

I'll send the STEEM to the winners in 7 days since I need to wait for the payout. Don't worry, I won't run away, but if I do feel free to start a witch hunt!

edit: for the sake of transparency, I will make a new post after 7 days to announce the winners

This giveaway wouldn't have been possible without @neoxian, @kingscrown, and everyone else who upvoted the original comment in question. Thank you guys so much!

I saw that thread yesterday. Your comment was great so I'm glad you got some nice upvotes! I don't having any high paying comments to enter into your contest, but I will upvote your post. :-) Thanks for giving back to the minnow community!

thank you! i really appreciate the support.

ahhh, any amount will do, really. doesn't have to be a big amount, just your biggest. it's just for fun, anyway. so i get a chance to pick some winners instead of doing it randomly haha

ok I'll look through my comments and see what I can find!

SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!! 💜 You deserve the reward because you did sit down patiently and answer a new Steemian's question in detail, which is actually quite helpful to many others as well! When i first joined Steemit, i saw a post (sorry can't find it now) about how Steemit is a place "to please the elites rather than the general crowd." Just paraphrasing here. Now i've learned the terms are "whales"(the elites) and "minnows" (the general crowd)...to be honest i had to google what a minnow was, i eat fish but seldom remember their names... please don't judge me! So back to the point, why are some Steemians more powerful in their votes, and generate more "steem money" while the others don't? How do whales become whales? It's still a mystery to me... Anyway, it's really nice of you to immediately give out what you have gained from the community. That's the spirit we shall all endorse! Keep up the good work! 💜So proud of you! (P.S. I don't have a high-paying comment but i did receive $80 from my post of doodling/calligraphy yesterday which was quite a supprise to me too and I'm truly grateful to all the upvoters, so i'm keeping the tips for now. lol)

don't worry, i can hardly tell different fish apart either. they all look the same to me :p

there are a couple of ways you can become more "powerful" on steemit with your votes. i'll try to explain the 2 main ways:

  1. you just keep posting and commenting and slowly grind your way up. when you get steem, you can "power up" and it will add to your steem power. steem power is basically your power level. the more you have, the more weight your vote will carry on steemit :)

  2. just buy steem from one of the many exchanges and power it up. you are essentially buying yourself into the system, so you can consider it a shortcut. but there is risk involved since the price of steem can fluctuate, and you might find yourself on the losing end of an investment.

most whales on steemit today are those who have been here since the start, and have either accumulated steem power from posting over the year, or simply invested in steem when the price was low. lowest point was when 1 steem was worth $0.07, and now it's worth about $2!! so there are some users like @trafalgar who went balls deep and invested $100,000 when steem was at about $0.20, and now he is worth over $1,000,000 on steemit :)

That's awesome :-) What goes around comes around here @ steemit :-)
Whales get paid handsomely for curating, just like the posters they up vote do.
Some will do what they call a ( circle jerk ) and just vote for alt accounts or other whales, but its all public and will come back on them eventually, or not ?
Just like 1 store will buy something for a dollar and sell for $80 and another is happy with say $10 per sale, but at the end of the day sell 10- 20 times more :-). Every thing eventually comes out in the wash :-)
Rob people today and they will return the disfavor another day.
We use crypto because banks are killing us, although we once needed them to store our wealth, today that's no longer the case.
Life Love Laugh Share & Prosper my friend :-)

Life is Good @ steemit.com & getting better every day

hey cody! hope all is well with you :)

you bring up some very good points. i'm sure not all whales are as supportive and generous as those mentioned in my post. but as you say, everything is public on the blockchain. they will eventually be caught out and all credibility/authority will be lost for them.

i agree, banks are the true scum of the universe.

thank you so much for your comment, i really appreciate the support :)

Thanks for reciprocating, here is my 5 cents worth LOL
Keep on posting, I'll keep reading :-)

Cheers my Friend

I used a joke I was told by an old man in my village and got $12.68! I'm proud of that fact on it's own. I'm literally a professional comedian now...
