How would you define an 'Active User'?
To calculate the "active" users, I have included any transaction that has been made by an account. This can be a post, upvote, downvote, transfer, sbd conversion, power up, power down or even the creation of the steem account itself.
Here are my numbers for the last 30 days (June 20 - July 20):
- All active accounts (including account_create): 105,889
- All active accounts (excluding account_create): 80,141
- Active curators: 68,614
- Active authors: 53,510
- Active curators and authors: 75,436
To my surprise it seems there are a lot of accounts created that are not being used thereafter. Strange... I don't know why. Anyway, as of today, I won't count these accounts as 'Active' anymore.
All data is coming directly from the Steem blockchain and is based on UTC time.

9. Steem Price Update
¯\___(ツ)____/¯ Follow me @penguinpablo for daily Steem statistics.
Awesome datas , please keep us updated. I follow you , thanks for your work.
I think account creation is a very significant user action, as such it should be part of the active stats. So i think ur original calc was better.
Yes many sign up and are never active, but that is because the sign up takes so long and is complicated.
I think active should just mean any activity, ie any type of transaction.
What do u think?
I prefer to exclude the accounts that have no activity after creation. I do not really consider a user as active of he hasn't used his account.
I was actually surprised by the difference. I agree with you the sign up process is to complicated. Hopefully this will improve after hard fork 20. Perhaps the difference will then be lower as well.
Yea. I think either way is fine as long as we know what it is.
Ive had a few friends that signed up and were confused and thus did not actually ever use steem due to the sign-up process.
They're missing out haha :)
I'm so glad I found your daily report. Getting all this info served right in my feed really helps my stay up to date on what's going on here on steemit. Thanks for all your hard work!
Always interesting to read your statistics.
@angrezi got you a $0.43 @minnowbooster upgoat, nice! (Image: pixabay.com)

This info is very helpful for new steemit users like me because I still do not fully understand about the world of steemit! Thank you I hope you continue to provide interesting and latest information.
Love watching all these stats, great that the Daily Active Users (Point 3 from this post) has been increasing very nicely!
I spend all day reading and writing about cryptocurrency because it is making the world a better place to live in. Here are some of my most popular articles

Nice stats. There are 2 things I think worth mentioning and maybe would look nice to be correlated to some of the graphs.
One is the fact that more people are commenting than creating posts. I think is a sign of maturity. As steem grows, you can not be noticed when you write small, low quality posts. It's easier to contribute to a strong topic in somebody's else post.
Second, I think the activity is correlated with the steem price. The rewards for the posts are getting low so more people get discouraged as they see they earning are getting low, so they stop posting and being less active...
I'm new and changed my strategy last week. I was trying hard to post a lot. Now I try for 1 post a day but post many more comments than that.
I got the suggestion of 10-30 comments a day and than later saw a post suggesting 100 comments a day!!!! I'm not up to that, but I'm still going to focus in that direction. I earn more steem money (still not understanding it) and I learn more about this place by commenting than by posting.
With everything I do post - I focus on keywords for the search engines. Steemit is small with readers, but the alexa and moz ranking mean that people from the outside will see my work better than my own 6 year old sites.
I'm really encouraged to be here even though the learning curve is a sledgehammer to my brain. I'm really a weight loss and health author and blogger and know nothing of crypto etc. I guess I will soon learn this new skill :)
interesting observations - now that Steem (http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/steem/) along with other cryptos have shot up, it'll be interesting to see if that positively impacts Steem's posts, active user total, etc. I'm guessing YES :)
I think some of these may be accounts created for sale. See anonsteem, who sell anonymous steemit accounts:

Good job keep it up.
It looks like this network can have an amazing future. Just waiting for Russian language and community. P.S. penguinpablo is a funniest nickname I have ever seen))
