Principal lessons learned from President Joe Biden's State of the Union speech

in #steemit9 months ago

In his bid for reelection, President Joe Biden gave a boisterous third State of the Union address that may rank among his most significant addresses to date.

His list of goals was lengthy and included highlighting his achievements while in office, outlining plans for a second term, calming fears about his age and health, and drawing comparisons with Republicans—including competitor Donald Trump.

Here are a few important lessons learned:

Biden takes on Trump: Although he did not mention his predecessor by name, it was clear that former President Trump was the focal point of one of the most politically charged annual speeches in recent memory, Biden's State of the Union Address. After initially attacking Trump, a trend became apparent in the speech: Biden constantly compared himself to Trump on issues like abortion, immigration, taxation, and more.

Unpredictable speech: State of the Union addresses are frequently formal events with predetermined lists of recommendations and policies. But Biden often deviated from the script, adding impromptu quips. The president was energized by his lighthearted sparring matches with Republicans about immigration, Social Security, and taxation. After last year's speech, when his back-and-forth with Republicans in the audience stood out, Biden seemed to have incorporated those moments into his speech.

Age concerns: Biden's age and suitability for leadership have come to dominate the presidential race. He is a force to be reckoned with. In addition to the content of his speech, his appearance and mannerisms had a significant role in how his message was understood by the American people. The president surprised fans by coming out with a fiery address that was very different from some of his more reserved ones.

American leadership abroad: Normally, foreign policy is not a major focus of State of the Union speeches, but for reasons that are not totally under his control, Biden is leading U.S. foreign policy amid a period of intense tensions across the world. The future of US support for the Russia-Ukraine war is uncertain as it continues. Furthermore, the humanitarian catastrophe that has resulted from Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza, which was sparked by the October 7 assault, is causing Biden's political alliance to split.
