Trump posts a $91.6 million bond in response to the Carroll case's defamation ruling.

More than half a billion dollars in civil fines are being faced by Donald J. Trump.

In a defamation lawsuit he lost recently to writer E. Jean Carroll, Donald J. Trump avoided a potential financial and legal catastrophe on Friday by posting a $91.6 million bond, a few days before the deadline to close the transaction.

An outside insurance firm posted the bail, which will keep Ms. Carroll from collecting the judgment while Mr. Trump files an appeal.

Ms. Carroll received a $83.3 million award from a federal jury in January, but Mr. Trump has since requested a stay in the judgment. Lewis A. Kaplan, the case's presiding judge, turned down Mr. Trump's plea for a temporary respite, placing the onus on him to either obtain the bail or come up with the money himself.

The bond was deposited by Mr. Trump with a Monday deadline approaching. Since the former president bears interest responsibility, the bond amount exceeds the $83.3 million judgment.
