Better Promotion for Everyone - Suggestion
Hey everyone, I've been thinking today how Steemit could help good Minnows and Dolphins to grow.
Let's face it, the trending page is almost a reserved space for a bunch of people.
I take a look at trending almost every day but a big part of the content I see there is a limited list of users who are whales or supported by them.
I have to agree that their content is quite often quite good as well, but I'd like to see good stuff others create as well and the hot page isn't really delivering on that.
My suggestion, therefore, is a trending page for each of the main user levels.
First of all, directly clicking on trending will still get you to the current trending page, so no additional complexity required here. Also, the design of the bar won't change we don't need any additional links there.
But, when hovering over the "trending" link a dropdown list appears:
Ignore the bad style of my bad HTML mockup but it would basically open something better looking as this enabling you to go to the trending minnows, dolphins and whales pages.
This would help the best minnows to turn dolphins and the best dolphins to become whales even faster and help to distribute the reward pool more equally between everyone.
Now, this is the easiest part of this, as a community we would have to decide how to correctly classify people.
I will write a proposal here, but I'd appreciate if we, as a community, could discuss this and I can adapt the proposal during the 7 days with the additions of you guys.
Whales: Over 100k SP, or over 25k SP and over 5000 followers
Dolphins: Over 5k SP, or over 1000 followers and over 1k sp
Minnows: Everything under the above
- Only counting owned voting power, discarding any delegations.
I hope I can get some good feedback so I can adapt this system to perfect it, so it might really become an option.
I'd really like to see that. Some of the trending content is like suuuuuper bad and boring. And they get hundreds of dollars for posting their shitting content everyday.
When I came to steemit it described that "quality" content gets rewarded. Well that's definetely NOT the case. Content of whales gets rewarded. That's not necessairely quality content. It's just content.. and they happen to have other whales upvoting them everyday.
I really hope to see changes about that in the future.. this is a great suggestion!
Whales upvoting whales, whales upvoting themselves, whales using other accounts to upvote themselves, those are things which are always going to happen, that's also completely understandable if you have that power you want to use it for yourself a bit. The problem I see is that, the content they upvote makes other peoples content invisible, and that's what I am trying to fight with this.
replay pls
I'm new to the community and I just noticed the same as you; Most of trends are run by whales which makes minnows like me hard to compete.
Creating three different categories would help with it. However, the incentive to vote a minnow is not as good as voting a dolphin or a whale because the expected value of the curation won't be as good. So just adding three categories won't end up the problem. There is something that needs to be done to increase the incentives to upvote minnows and dolphins.
For sure it's a great idea! I really hope that your suggestion comes true. Only this way the whales do not appear more than the other users.
I think your idea is awesome @raycoms , like really, what a good idea... I always thought the same about the trending page, even though, I almost don't like to see it anymore. I prefer watching the new content in "Hot". Anyways, your idea is excellent, I hope you can get this done !! The best wishes and greetings from Venezuela. Upvoted and Followed
There is no second thought on the main suggestion. I fully support it. We have to give minnows and dolphins a chance. Your suggestion gives that chance. It also opens up new opportunities for curators.
The classification does need discussion. I have reservation over the number of followers because it is not a good indicator. Two people having 1000 SP have equal influence but the same two people having 1000 followers do not have equal opportunity.
1000 followers may be any people on Steemit. Half of them even be dead or inactive. One person may have people with good SP as followers but the other one may be having people with very low SP.
I would like to highlight my own example. I do a lot of educational work regarding Steemit so most of my followers are newbies with less than 10 SP of their own.
I think a better indicator would be the total amount of SP of all the followers. That still won't account for who is active and who isn't. I think this criteria would also fail.
We should use some acceptable standard alongwith the SP. You are right. The matter needs discussion. Interesting to see what you come up with.
I must admit i am not 100% conscious about all the mechanics that this platform has yet.
That being said, it just seems much more fair if one had the opportunity to choose among those three types + the normal trending option (that one will stay and will be as it is now, right?), no? It gives more visibility to a broader range of people as long as the curators feel like setting the filter on the trending like you showed.
I think this is a genius idea! Being new I often look through the new posts and while most of them are low effort, I still try to find and upvote good things I see because we as plankton get so few views!
Do you really feel like the "trending minnows" section would really get any more looks? If you consider 50% of the people are here just trying to follow a whale, I would hope the divisions would work, but I am not sure. I wish there was something to get us lower guys posts viewed more. I think you are definitely on the right path. Keep up the great work!
That depends on us, I'd definitely visit them, if only 10% of the people visit those, this would make it worth it already.
My suggestion is to remove automatic upvotes or any kind of trail upvotes.
Nobody can produce an invariable good quality content.
What do you think?
I think this is not as easy out of several reasons:
a) This is extremely hard to make since detecting automatic upvotes or trails is not as easy and would motivate people just to code better bots
b) The problem is people automatically upvoting people who do not deserve it and not people doing it in general
Just saw another post that is on the top of the hot page, I believe it is a problem too.
Everyone knows the services of automatic upvoting, so it can be done easily I think.
And then just a few secretive services will be left.
The problem is doing the same percentage of upvote on each post you chose to auto upvote.
Even the world's best writers can't create a persistent and best seller work.
Though their bad work will be quite better than our's good. But I am saying that auto upvote makes people believe that no matter what, they will get a certain amount of rewards in their post and every dollar counts.
It is just an opinion, your's was much better.
You're completely right, but like I said, the problem is not with the service offering it the problem is on the site of the person voting for it.
Let's say I have someone who upvotes each one of my posts, I can decide to go two ways:
If the first case happens, this is very good for Steemit since an automatic upvote can motivate the people to do better.
In the second case, it is the duty of the person who set up the automatic vote to remove the auto vote until the quality of the content lived up to the amount of the vote.
Well, in this way, you are right.
Awesome idea! I hope Steemit can make changes to the current system because you are absolutely right.
