How To Stop Overthinking Everything! This Is How!
Hello, People of the world! At first, I'd like to say it's great to write something again after a while of not blogging. Now today I looked back on some Steem articles from other people and it motivated me to do the same! With that momentum I have right now I am going to write something that might be useful to you.
So let's get right to it!
I am going to cover the following topics:
- What is overthinking?
- Can it be harmful?
- How can we stop it?
So now you know what exactly it is I am going to talk about, I am just simply going to start with what overthinking is.
Overthinking in a simple language is when you start thinking further than necessary and will often lead to simple things become complicated and easy decisions become complex. If we only have 3 ice cream flavors to choose from, it's easy not to think too much about it. But once there are 25 flavors to choose from, it soon becomes difficult. Now, this is a very simple example so let's use a more complicated one. Let's imagine that your boss has not invited you to talk to the other partners. You might start to think that he forgot you on purpose because you made a mistake the other day. Or you start to think that he is soon going to fire you and there is no need for you to be at the meeting. And also maybe it could be because you were 2 minutes late today. Your brain is so creative that it can come up with 1000 reasons why happened what happened. And the funny thing is... you will never know unless you simply ask him after the meeting. And let's say he simply forgot you due to a busy day, that means you have tortured yourself throughout the entire day and has affected your work and mood.
So the next question would be if it's harmful. I'd say definitely yes. Because in the example above here it results in a lot of energy being used for nothing. You are worrying about nonsense and wasting your energy on nonsense. And that energy is very valuable for things that actually matter. it's proven that what we think is what we become. When we think we suck at something we tend to behave like it. It's like a cycle.
Thought: I can't count to 10.
Action: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9...
Result: See I told you I can't count to 10.
Thought: I can't count to 10.
Action: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9...
Thought: ...etc
This way we limit our lives and we take away the greatness that we DO have inside us. And as I said above here we only have a limited amount of energy every single day. Using that energy on poor choices leads to poor actions and poor actions lead to more poor thoughts. And those poor choices all come from the fact that you believe what your thoughts are telling you. If you master your mind you can truly become who you want to be. And yes if it means it limits you as a human being, I'd say its harmful.
Now you might want to know how exactly we can stop it then? And I must first say that this is something every single individual in this world is struggling with or has struggled with. Your not the only one and people that have conquered this problem have proven it can be solved through the following actions.
- Meditation
- Yoga
- Listening to music
- Go for a walk
- Sit upside down (yeh this works)
These are all very mindfulness related things and make you help to shut down that voice in your head. These days we are so distracted by every little piece of information in this world that we always tend to think about what's going on in our surroundings. These tips above here help you to shut down the voice in your head and to get back to your body and consciousness instead of living in your subconsciousness which is your thinking.
Now let's do a small assignment so you understand what I mean
Look at your finger and tell me what the background looks like? The background looks vague right?
Now look at the background and tell me what your finger looks like? The finger looks vague right?
It's because you shift your focus.
When you always focus on what your thoughts are telling you, you will always stick to one truth, but once you decide to focus on the things outside what your thoughts are telling you, you might see the world as you have never seen it before.
This obviously sounds a lot easier than done, but everything is easier said than done. Picking up a peanut is easier said than done, Eating a marshmallow is easier said than done. Eat 3 bananas in 2 minutes is easier said than done. Do something out of your existing routine. The things you do every single day. Martin Luther King once said “Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
And if you don't know where to begin, just put on your jacket and go for a walk. And if you feel like starting meditation, just grab your headphones and go sit on your bed and do some breathing exercises. It's on you. And I believe you can conquer your overthinking.
