My Best Christmas Present This Year (one clue, it begins with an S!)

in #steemit7 years ago

I know, I know, we shouldn’t have favourites… BUT, this year I got something extra special.

It wasn’t my new pair of vegan boots (although to be fair, those are pretty great), or my new jeans, or a vegetable spiralizer …no, no, no, it was something far longer lasting…

Below is a photo of me as a reindeer. A happy reindeer. Why is that reindeer so happy I hear you say?

For Christmas, I came to finally understand the value and power of Steemit!

I’ll be honest, I was introduced to it back in October by my brother @lifeofjord (follow for some epic travel videos and photography). He gave me the Steemit spiel, telling me that I could post my own articles, on any topic I want, and make real life money from them. Honestly, it sounded too good to be true.

To put this in context, as a professional writer, this is usually an uphill struggle resulting in me spending a lot of my time writing things I don’t particularly believe in or care about (living the dream right?!)

At first I was dubious but I posted an article I had written a while back about mental health - not thinking anything more about it, I promptly forgot about my Steemit account.

The Christmas Miracle Arrives

Fast-forward two months and it’s Christmas time. The logs are on the fire, the chestnuts are roasting and Jack Frost was nipping at my nose (not literally, I was in Spain, but something along those lines)

Having not seen my brother for several months he came bounding in and within minutes was regaling us with the money he was making from Steemit. He encouraged me to check my forgotten article and to my great surprise and delight people had enjoyed it and up-voted me. Showing me that I could turn this into real life money, my Steemit guide helped me to convert this into around two days worth of my normal salary – for one article!

Why is Steemit a Christmas miracle for me?

• I can write what I CARE ABOUT and be rewarded for it
• I can connect with like-minded people and be rewarded for it
• I can support an emerging platform that is free from commercial and advertising constraints AND be rewarded for it!

But I began to wonder, maybe it wasn’t a one off miracle at all. MAYBE it was the start of something bigger. Maybe JUST MAYBE it was a gift that could keep on giving for 2018.

So I made a new years resolution for 2018 – to post on Steemit EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Lets see if I can make one Christmas present multiply, and provide gifts for the whole family next year (hurray vegetable spiralizers for one and all!)
