Proud of our leadership : U Thant
"60 years ago: Burma's new Permanent Representative to the UN U Thant presented his credentials to then Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold.
Until he left for New York in 1957, U Thant had been a Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister of Burma.
In 1957 the UN was four years into the dynamic and visionary leadership of Dag Hammarskjold of Sweden. U Thant quickly threw himself into the work of the world organisation, focusing especially on issues related to decolonisation and war in Algeria. Hammarskjold soon identified U Thant as one of a few possible successors.
1957 was the year President Dwight Eisenhower sent federal troops to enforce school integration in Little Rock, Arkansas, the Soviet Union launched its first Sputnik satellite, Toyota began exporting cars to America, and The Bridge on the River Kwai won the Oscar for Best Picture.
U Thant moved to New York with his wife and two children, renting an apartment on the Upper East Side. He was then 48 years old."
