Help me get adafuit on board with Steem Dollars!

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Sorry for being so quiet these past few days. As you know I've been working on an initiative to bring educational opportunities to steemit. One of the initiatives I'm working on in conjunction with @imaxess is to bring college level educational materials over to steemit specifically targeting aspiring young doctors.

But my end goal here is to build out a complete, soup to nuts educational platform where anyone, anywhere in the world, can just learn a new thing every day at home in their spare time and eventually even earn an accredited degree simply by taking courses on the platform.

Beyond medicine, there is a huge opportunity right now for us to bring core technical competency courses here, but real technical courses, require a lot of hands on materials and for that, we are going to need a supplier...

Years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Lady Ada at a talk she was giving and while we barely even got to shake hands, I was just floored by her vision. What I remember most, is just how impressed I was with her desire to make technical knowledge accessible to everyone. Her videos introducing electronics concepts to kids were required watching in my house.

So in a way, everything you see me doing here to bring education to steemit is at least in part inspired by her.

Lady Ada is also the founder of Adafruit industries. A large and well known supplier of affordable hardware and educational kits to schools and educators as well as home hobbyists and home schoolers.

At the moment, they only accept paypal and amazon, but I've recently popped into their forum asking them to consider accepting SBD as a method of payment as well. I was thinking it would probably be pretty straightforward to integrate #blocktrades into their payment flow in general.

I'm hoping @blocktrades will watch this and chime in.

However adding any new payment system is always a tradeoff. I'm certain they would like to know that if they put forth the effort to accept steem dollars, that of course it will result in additional sales for them beyond their core audience. I haven't even broached the idea of advertising on here with them. But I'm sure they are savvy enough to see how getting an exclusive lock on the eyeballs of 100,000 nerds at literally no cost to them, might be a good idea. So maybe this will be enough to get them to at least consider coming here and telling us about their latest gadgets for sale ;)

So I'm asking all of my followers to go to the Adafruit Forums and let them know that if they build it, we will come (and order more great products!).

Thank you everyone, please make sure to drop by the Adafruit Forums and voice your support!

p.s. All SBD raised from this post will be used to purchase educational kits and supplies from adafruit, one way or the other.

update: I found an old article from 2013 saying they would accept bitcoin via bitpay. It's not listed anywhere on their site. I placed a test order to see if any other payment options were available. It looks like they used to accept bitcoin, but the checkout page sent me to a dead link when I tried to checkout. So just an FYI they USED to accept bitcoin and they still MIGHT. I would like to ask everyone to head over to the Adafruit Forums and let them know that if they build it, we will come (and order more great products!) and let them know that SteemDollars are better ;)

update 2: After talking with Nick in their customer service department, it turns out that they do in fact accept bitcoin still. It's still via bitpay. We don't know where the problem was with my order, but at least they are aware now. I have to say I'm very impressed with their customer service. They are watching the forum thread so head on over to Adafruit Forums and let them know this whole steem dollars thing is something you would like to see them accept!
Thanks!

I am a huge fan of adafruit and have bought many boards and other stuff from there page ..

Awesome! Mind stopping by their forums and letting them know though? The link is in the article. I really appreciate it!

You are awesome my friend! Thank you!

I obviously support it & resteemed!

Ahh for the days when I looked that good!

Make sure you mention steemduino, my arduino library for interacting with the Steem RPC API. :)

You make sure to mention it. ;)
Whole point is to get over there and let them know we're interested in their products and willing to buy.
If you've got products that make for a nice synergy it might be a really great idea to call it out.

BTW your steemduino library has given me an idea. So expect a big thank you post in the near future if the idea works out ;)

Will do. Done. I actually ordered an Adafruit board last week to use with steemduino. Once it arrives I can start working on the library some more.

Looking forward to your post. You've got me curious. If in the development of your idea you need some help/updates to the library, let me know.

@bitcalm absolutely! And thanks again! Nice post BTW but remember their forums use BB code not markdown ;)

WTF is BB code? lol. I get the same with Disqus. People comment on my blog with markdown code blocks and it looks like shit.

Who you callin a nerd?! ;) It's awesome what you're doing. You have my support, I'll make a post tomorrow.

Excellent! And anyone who uses this site is a nerd, but that's a very good thing. I like smart people, it's why I left facebook, complete lack of intelligent life in there.

Haha, I took it as a compliment. Thanks for what you do brother.

You're very welcome! Thanks for stopping by adafruit and letting them know we're all very interested in what they're selling.

That would be awesome if they would trade steem for gadgets!
Klye just got coinpayments.net to accept steem today, so it could be as easy as adding a wordpress plugin. Here is his announcement with the details https://steemit.com/steem/@klye/coinpayments-net-steem-steem-dollar-integration-success

excellent post congratulations

Thanks! I hope you'll pop over to
https://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=104253
and let them know that if they accept Steem Dollars, you will order more, They really do have a lot of cool things!

This is fantastic! I have gotten so many Arduino and Raspberry Pi accessories from them!

I know and I love how they make their own stuff instead of shipping it in from some lowest bidder country.
I've always loved their quality.

Yes yes and yes to this proposal. Big fan of Adafruit. You got my vote.
Edit: Posted on Adafruit. It's on like Donkey Kong!
Edit 2: Take the pledge with me. I'm going to check back here over the next 24 hours and 100% vote all the comments. Let's run up the totals for education!

I saw your post it was awesome!
Also yes I will be upvoting all commentors here with my super minnow powers! ;)
Consider resteeming this if you're reading this far!

What do you think of this slogan?

STEEM for STEAM!

Get it?

How about STEEMIT for STEM?
Or maybe just STEAMIT?

Works for me. I kind of like using STEAM because it includes the Arts. I wonder what Adafruit's opinion is on that.

You're talking about the company that invented wearables as fashion accessories. I'm sure they're fine with it. I had no idea you could sew electronics into a hair ribbon before...

Planning to buy one of these kits for each of the women in my life for Christmas this year.

I will create an account tonight and leave a message. Thanks for having shared it with #steemSTEM :)

I'm really glad of that. Also please let them know who you in particular work for... It umm might help a little ;)

Done :) Let's hope it works ^^

I will write with my real-life credentials, don't worry ^^
