Animal Locomotion. (Displacement)

Have you observed how the animals move?

On a walk through the zoo or the aquarium you can see many animals moving from one place to another. Some faster than others, some with legs, others with all their bodies, some with wings and fins.

The study to know how animals move in biomechanics, is the LOCOMOTION (The way animals move and move from one place to another is what we call.)

Sponges, for example, are sessile and move the fluid, which is through your body (filtration feed). Even so, most animals have to move to find food, to mate and for other needs, therefore, the ability to move efficiently is essential for their survival.

Locomotion requires strength to overcome friction and often also gravity.
In a terrestrial environment, the gravity of the environment must be overcome. In aqueous media, however, friction becomes the main obstacle, and gravity is less important.

Some animals do not have to spend a lot of energy to maintain a afloat since their body has a design that allows it easily, while others sink and have to struggle to stay on the surface.

For birds or animals that move by means of flight, friction in the air can be a problem, and the bodies of the birds emphasize this point. The different movement within the water, since there is no way that a living organism is less dense than air.

Obeserve how does our pet or other animal move?
What part of your body does the cat use to jump, the iguana to run, the fish to swim?

Let's see some examples to know the different forms of annal locomotion.

SWIMMING

The vast majority of animals that live in the water use their fins and tails to swim, such as fish, dolphin, whales.

FLYING

Birds mostly use their wings to fly, as do insects. there are exceptions such as the bat that is a mammal but its structure is designed to move through its wings.

WALKING, RUNNING OR JUMPING

Many animals such as manisflies, reptiles, some insects and birds use their limbs (2 or 4 legs) to walk, run or jump.

REPTAR

There are some animals that use their entire body to move because they do not have legs, this is the case of the worm, the snail, among others.

CURIOUS LOCOMOTION CASES

  • The flying fish swim with their fins, but when they are threatened by another fish they are propelled and can plan to a length of 50 meters with their lateral wings that they use as wings.

  • Some animals have legs PALMÍPEDAS that are legs with a membrane between their fingers as it is the case of the ducks, the swans, the otter. With these legs they can walk and swim without any problem

I share this video made in the Veracruz-Mexico aquarium to observe the way the dolphin moves.

The locomotion, allows the ainals, look for couples, feed and overcome obstacles. It is the way of living in the animal world. While some run to save their lives, others run to take their food.
