Learn How To Make Your Own Compost

In one of the recent presentations I gave to the farmers in my area, I discussed the necessity of adding good compost to the soil, to ensure healthy crops. In the farming programs we implement, saving on costs is key, so making one’s own compost is the best solution. Added to this, making your own compost allows you to keep it natural and organic, which is very important to our community.

Steps on how to make your own compost :

Firstly, prepare an area in your land, about 1 X 1 square meters in dimension.

Dig up this measured area, with the aim of turning and aerating the soil. You want to keep this soil because of the existing bacteria.

Add twigs and leaves to your soil, to the depth of about 10 cm. We do this so that water can be retain in the soil and fermentation can occur.

Add materials that contain the substance phosphorus, such as dry grass. Dry grass is also a carbon-containing material and serves as a source of potassium for plants.

Add wood powder to the soil, about 5 cm in depth. This also produces potassium.

Add some wet grass to activate the fermentation process.

Add materials containing Nitrogen, like bean plants.

Cover with soil.

Water your compost heap with an organic fertilizer made from goat urine.

At this stage it is important to keep the compost heap damp.

You can check if it has the correct amount of water added to it by measuring the temperature of the soil. To do this you can simply insert your hand in to the medium, if the sol feels cold then you need to add more water, if it feels warms then there is enough water and the soil and other materials will start to ferment.

Allow the compost to stand for 3 months, it will then be ready for use.
If we add manure to the compost we make, you can then also use it fish feed. As seen in the photo above.

GOOD LUCK
