This is really informative for me. I was skeptical about students learning estimates rather than the actual sums. I found myself needing to find the sum before knowing what the estimate would be. But now I understand more fully that this is a good tool to give to students.
Thanks for stopping by dear friend @dbennett. Yes, most often we need to find the exact sum of numbers as you said but it is useful to know the reasonable estimation of sum. Estimation force us to round the numbers up or down into tens, hundreds or thousands which is very helpful to guess the answer.
