Oral Communication, the prepared speech

Speeches are made for different purposes. They may be made to persuade, inform or entertain an audience. Originally and a fresh approach will inspire your audience. The speaker should speak clearly and convincingly in plain English and on an issue that shows an awareness of a world beyond their immediate environment.

The subject matter should be worldly, well constructed, and should concern social issues. When delivering your speech, it is important to remember that the speech length is very important, when prepared for about 6 minutes and impromptu 3 minutes maximum.

The delivery of your speech must be convincing and engaging. Choose a topic that genuinely interests you. Your own passion for that area will automatically infuse insight into your speech. Don't talk about issues that are already known to your audience, e.g. poverty in Africa is bad! People already know that.

Choice of Topic

Successful communicators are enthusiastic, energetic and passionate about their subjects.

They are able to share these qualities with others.

  • The choice of topic should be one that suits the speaker.
  • The speaker is able to motivate the listeners only if he or she has the interest, knowledge and belief in the subject under discussion.

  • It is also important to be sensitive to the audience's needs and interest.
