Humankind is in a race for life against global warming!

One of the subjects I teach and am very passionate about, is science. The last few lessons about greenhouse gasses and global warming, struck me hard, and made me think. Are we doing enough to try and save our planet or do we just leave this for other people?

Everywhere there are organizations that save the whales, and save the Rhino's- which are all brilliant ways to save the environment, but do YOU as a human being living IN this environment do enough to make a difference?

What is global warming?

Due to our over excessive use of natural resources, which is fueled by population increase and economic growth and material possessions, this is causing great damage to the environment.

Humans are the earth's greatest danger and with the burning of fossil fuels it causes a build-up of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which trap heat and cause global warming.

We might not see the effect of global warming now but what about future generations? How long would the earth be able to sustain itself, if we do not start NOW to make a difference?

That is not the biggest problem. We are wiping out the marine life in the ocean, we are destroying rain-forests and other wild ecosystems. Fertile land is turned into deserts by over farming and pollution. We are polluting our water, our soil and air with toxic chemicals that are dangerous to both us and the wildlife. If you think about it realistically we are busy killing ourselves one day at a time.

It's time to wake up and smell the coffee!

The damage is done already, but there is still hope. If we make more people aware of the problems, then we can turn this around. Thousands of people are becoming green and there is a vast amount of ideas out there that can help YOU make a difference.

  1. Make people aware! The impact of your actions goes further than you think. You may inspire other people to make their own changes.
  2. Live with less. The vast amount of environmental problems are ultimately due to our demand for new things. We all want the new car, the clothes and the gadgets, but those things all eats up raw materials and energy. When you can't live without something, then try to re-use it, and if you can't then at least recycle it.
  3. Try and create less waste. Make sure that when you buy products, you buy containers that are Eco-friendly and that can be used for something else.
  4. Use green alternatives. Don't use plastic bags. Use a bag that can be used more than once. Buy local and organic products. Even though they might be a little more expensive you will be healthier and once you are in the habit of focusing on this, you won't even notice the difference.
  5. Do what you can! Even if you don't live completely green, the little changes that you make, will definitely make a difference in the long run.

It is time to make the change NOW. It takes three weeks to create a habit. Just take three weeks in YOUR life to start and make a difference.

Awesome contribution @giantbear. We are so very slow in adapting to new realities and it seems always easier to pass the buck. Thank you for adding your voice!

I couldn't agree with you more. Where we live they offer us a free recycling collection service. We don't even have to sort it and it's collected on the same day as our other rubbish. Sadly I hardly see any of my neighbours particpating. There is so much being said about caring for the environment and yet people are still so set on not doing their bit.

The town council here has tried on various occasions to make people more aware but it seems to fail every time. They are currently busy with an initiative where we have to sort our rubbish into recyclable and non- recyclable - They even provide the bags but people are just not interested...don't understand why and it is not as if it takes time out of your day...

I agree with you, have to minimize our waste be more environmentally friendly as much as we can. Going totally green is very impossible as it is now. Our himan demands are high.

You are right we have to change now.

@giantbear people might not be understanding now. Buy for sure we all will realize later in the future.. so we should start take caring of our natural resources.
