Sounds like you really enjoy your profession. I tried to teach myself digital art programs but was never good at mastering them. I'd have to take a class to figure all the features out. Really good advice for people thinking about the field.
I really do enjoy designing, yeah. Now that I'm mostly in a managerial role I have the benefit of picking the tasks I want to do and I'll always go for the Photohopping tasks :) Getting to know your way around Photoshop is a bit daunting at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's like opening up a new world of possibilities! :)
