Tales from Teacher’s College

Tales from Teacher’s College

We learn a lot of different things in Teacher’s college. We learn the fine art of educating the world youth. We are given the skills to prepare units, lessons and activities that will engage students and give them the wisdom to be responsible and productive members of society.

However, there are many other things that were taught to us as we were preparing to embark on our teaching journey. These are the stories from teachers college.

Both through our teachers at the university and the teachers we worked with during our practicum experience, we learned a valuable lesson in terms of our potential future classrooms.

Make it yours and make it the students

Planning out the organization of your classroom is so important. Everything from the layout of the desks to what is on the walls can have an effect on the learning environment. You want to make sure that your students are going to be comfortable and that you are setting things up in a way that maximizes their productivity. You also need to make things fit with your teaching style. You have to be comfortable in your teaching environment in order to be effective at your job as well.

This is going to look very different for every teacher. Some teachers want to have the walls filled with charts and posters and lots of visual aids for the students. Others might want less on the walls to avoid added distraction. The seating arrangements will vary from teacher to teacher depending on how the best interact with students or how they want students to interact with each other.

The point was never to tell us how to set up our classrooms once we became teachers but rather to make sure that we understood the importance of planning out how our classrooms would be organized.

This has been such a helpful tool and is a big part of the work I do the week before the school year starts. It is also important to recognize when something isn’t working and change it up. It is your classroom and you can adjust as you need and when you need to.

Another great piece of advice and empowerment to use the force inside us.
