Memorizing game for junior high students. Memorizing game untuk siswa SMP (BILINGUAL)

Teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesian schools, especially in a junior high in a rural area is a very challenging experience. This morning, 7 grader students studied about things in their classroom. In order to make the learning process became more exciting and fun, I created some flash cards containing pictures and it's name in English.
Mengajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing di sekolah-sekolah di Indonesia, terutama di SMP di daerah pedesaan merupakan pengalaman yang sangat menantang. Pagi ini, siswa kelas 7 belajar tentang benda-benda di kelas mereka. Agar proses belajar menjadi lebih seru dan menyenangkan, saya membuat beberapa kartu yang berisi gambar dan namanya dalam bahasa Inggris.

First of all, I showed them every picture related to things they could find in the classroom and asked them to repeat after me the name of things or vocabulary to get pronunciation practice.
Then I divided them into groups of 4-5 students and explained them the rules of the game that we would like to play named "memorizing game". Every card was put upside down and every one had two times chances to open the cards and to find the same two pictures because the pile of cards consisted of two same pictures. If they failed to get the same pictures from two opportunities given, they should put the two cards upside down again. Every player should pay attention to the cards opened to memorize as many as possible cards and got its pair when it came into their turn. The winner was those who got the most pair cards.
Pertama-tama, saya menunjukkan kepada mereka setiap gambar yang berkaitan dengan benda-benda yang dapat mereka temukan di kelas dan meminta mereka untuk mengulang mengucapkan kata setelah saya untuk mengetahui nama benda/kosa kata dalam bahasa Inggris dan untuk mendapatkan latihan pengucapan. Lalu saya membagi mereka menjadi kelompok siswa 4-5 dan menjelaskan aturan permainan yang ingin kami mainkan dengan nama "memorizing game". Setiap kartu diletakkan terbalik dan setiap siswa memiliki dua kali kesempatan untuk membuka kartu dan menemukan dua gambar yang sama karena tumpukan kartu terdapat dua gambar yang sama. Jika mereka gagal mendapatkan gambar yang sama dari dua peluang yang diberikan, mereka harus meletakkan kedua kartu itu terbalik lagi. Setiap pemain harus memperhatikan kartu yang dibuka untuk menghafal sebanyak mungkin kartu dan mendapat pasangannya saat giliran mereka. Pemenangnya adalah mereka yang mendapat kartu pasangan terbanyak.IMG_20180129_091306.jpg

There was one thing surprised me a lot when one student named Faisal who is not so outstanding in the classroom played very well. He could remember almost all cards that had been opened. I thought it happened by chance then we played again up to three rounds game and 1 final round when the best two players from each group played a final match. Surprisingly, Faisal got the second winner.
*Ada satu hal yang mengejutkan saya saat seorang siswa bernama Faisal yang tidak begitu menonjol di kelas bermain sangat baik. Dia bisa mengingat hampir semua kartu yang telah dibuka. Saya pikir itu terjadi secara kebetulan maka kami bermain lagi hingga tiga putaran dan 1 babak final saat dua pemain terbaik dari masing-masing grup memainkan pertandingan terakhir. Anehnya, Faisal mendapat juara kedua.*

Lesson learnt from our teaching and learning process is sometimes teachers tend to underestimate students. Especially when they get bad mark from the written test. We don't realize that might be it is also our mistakes when we can't suit all students learning style. Some students prefer to study by writing, some others might be prefer watching and learning by doing. That's why it is better to apply some different approaches to students.
Hal yang dipelajari dari proses belajar mengajar kita terkadang guru cenderung meremehkan siswa. Apalagi saat mereka mendapat nilai jelek dari tes tertulis. Guru tidak menyadari bahwa mungkin juga kesalahan kami saat kami mengajar tapi tidak sesuai dengan gaya belajar siswa tertentu. Beberapa siswa lebih memilih untuk belajar dengan menulis, beberapa orang lain mungkin lebih suka melihat dan belajar dengan melakukan. Itu sebabnya lebih baik menerapkan pendekatan yang berbeda kepada siswa.
