That is your reputation number.
It goes up when someone vote on your post or comment.
It comes down when someone flagging you.
When the voter have higher reputation, it will have bigger affect on your reputation.

Yes, it goes up fairly quick at first as you receive votes and you don't need too much to pass each level. It will slow down as each following level incrementally getting harder and harder to fill with votes:)
