On being a dilettante & choosing a path

in #steemitmamas6 years ago

I'm moving on from teaching and I want to create my own gig. But what?

I'm 40 years old, I have a 5-year-old and a 12-week-old, and we're remodeling our kitchen - and yet, I'm trying to figure out my next step in between all of my motherly tasks, usually while I'm pumping for my lazy baby who can't seem to fill her belly before falling asleep nursing.

I should be pumping now.

Sort of out of the blue, I got invited to join a very small group of women in my neighborhood to talk about business. We call ourselves "Neighborhood Businessers" But I'm not a business person! I am a writer. Well, I want to be a writer. From what I understand after doing a bit of research, being a successful writer IS a business. There is social media to contend with, pitches to give, niches to choose.

My interests are multitudinous! I have 12 ideas a day and it's like a sparkly object that distracts me each time. I was really into art for a while, making positive messages for kids, but the baby was coming. I want to write a memoir, but I keep changing how I want to do it. In the mean time, I have done almost nothing.

I am overwhelmed and I feel my psyche pulling me in all different directions at once. I can't concentrate on one thing and I have no idea how to choose one thing to focus on at a time.

How can I narrow it down? How can I make myself choose a path and stay on it? Can I make money from doing this thing?

My plan was/is freelance writing.

Here is what I have done so far:

  • domain name
  • email address

Here is what still needs to be done:

  • LITERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE!

I'm an academic - a lifelong student. I don't know what to do in the real world. But I shall persist. These businessing meetings every other week are holding me accountable for doing something, so I don't have to confess to being a total bum.

My motto:
Everyday, do SOMETHING.

How do you keep going on a new project when you don't really know what you're doing?
