Steemit Name Challenge - @jiafui

in #steemitnamechallenge6 years ago (edited)

There has been a username challenge going on in Steemit. Initially I stumbled across this challenge through a post written by @joythewanderer. It’s an interesting one! I thought it would be too boring for me to join the challenge since my username is named after my real name. Oh, but hey @davidke20 reminded me that I could have share how I got my real name “Jia Fui”.

Rules

Here are the rules of the challenge in case you are 'lucky' enough to be asked:

  1. Tell us in a post how you chose the current Steemit username you have. The story behind it.
  2. Tell us your real name!
  3. If you could change your current username, which name would you choose and why? If you have a possible usernames list, mention it!
  4. Use the tag #steemitnamechallenge so that anyone who cares at all can track all the posts and check them out
  5. Nominate 5 unfortunate souls for this challenge.

The Story

My username is exactly my real name – Loh Jia Fui. My Chinese name is 罗嘉慧. I used to hate my English/Malay name when I was a small kid because it is weird and hard to pronounce. Since I was young, a lot of people asked about my English/Malay name after knowing my Chinese name. I’m curious like them too! Nope, my English/Malay name is not translated from any Chinese dialects or whatsoever.

If I remembered correctly, I asked my parents when I was still in kindergarten. My name is merely a “beautiful accident”. So, here’s the story. When I was born, my parents intended to name me as Jia Hui (嘉慧)and my twin sister as Jia Shin (嘉欣). Both names were quite popular for baby girls that time. The officer in charge of registering new born babies registered my twin sister first and he/she picked up a phone call when he/she was about to register mine. He/she was distracted and didn’t listen carefully to the pronunciation of my parents and registered as ‘Fui’ instead of ‘Hui’. Since the officer is Malay, you know, they can never make sense of our Chinese names. My parents are not fluent in Malay at that time. They do not know how to tell the officer to correct my name. So, they just go with it. Yea, “Jia Fui”.

The moment I hear this story, I was like, “What? My parents are sure kidding me.” But it is true, so sad. “Do I have to live with this weird name for the rest of my life?” I asked. I kept grumbling to my parents that I want to change my name when I grow up. And my parents answered me that I could go to the National Registration Department and change it one day. As I grow up, I learn that there are a number of perks with a hard-to-remember and difficult-to-pronounce name. Like, for example, teachers won’t call me up so often in class as they cannot remember my name correctly. Hahah! It’s not that bad!

I don’t know what was going on in my mind back then that I dislike my name so much LOL. Guess it was because I was still a loss kid searching for her identity. If you asked me now, I’m perfectly comfortable to tell the world my name as “Jia Fui”!

If I’m given a chance to change my current username, which name would you choose?

Maybe yes, maybe no. I have no ideas. Or anyone has some good ideas on my username? I’m open to suggestions. :P
