Splinterlands

Splinterlands (aka Steem Monsters) is a blockchain based online Trading Card Game. Each player drafts their team of monsters with the random battle conditions they were dealt being taken into consideration. Climb the leaderboard, enter tournaments, win prizes including real money. I've been playing it for a few weeks now and really enjoy playing it.

Gold II

There are less than three days left of the current season (my first full season playing the game) and I finally managed to unlock Gold II league! My strategy has been to always complete my daily quest, to regularly enter contests giving away cards, to participate in the discussions on the official discord server when I have time and to catch as many tournaments as possible. Also, when I can I do posts such as this one with updates or strategies for the game and earn STEEM cryptocurrency for doing so. I generally reinvest this revenue into buying cards to level up my existing ones.

Reward Cards

As you go up to higher leagues the gameplay changes a bit. You encounter higher Mana caps more often. Your higher level cards have abilities not often found at the lower levels. The other players are generally have had more time to develop sophisticated strategies. It keeps you on your toes. You're rewarded with extra cards at the end of the season (unlocking Gold II will earn me 26 of them) but you also get extra reward cards from your daily quest. I completed my quest and claimed it after reaching Gold II and I got seven cards today. Here is a screenshot of them:

Card Rarity

There are four grades of rarity among the cards in Splinterlands (aka Steem Monsters.) From most common to least:

  • Common
  • Rare
  • Epic
  • Legendary

And each card also has a slight chance of being Gold Foil edition. The cards with the lowest circulation would be the gold foil edition Legendary cards. Some of these can go for hundreds of dollars on the open market. You don't need to spend a ton of money on this game to get these free cards. Just the starter pack, really, which is $10 and you can always sell your cards if you ever decide you no longer want to play the game. My cousin @derek0017 got a gold foil edition card worth $4 in his first week of playing. I was super jealous! It was one that I didn't have yet.

My Reward Cards

Today I got six Common grade cards which I used to help level up my existing ones (combining doubles is how you level up a card.) I also got an Epic card from the Death splinter called Phantom Soldier. It's a high mana cost flying monster with magic attack and a ton of health. Pretty cool! I didn't have that card yet. Could come in handy during the Earthquake battle condition.

Value of the Cards

I could sell my new Phantom Soldier but I'd rather have it as part of my pool of monsters to draft from when I play. It's not currently worth a lot on the open market right now. Just about 15 cents. It's not crazy rare. If this game gets more popular, which I believe it will, it will create a higher demand on the cards and increase their market value across the board. With the current and upcoming Tron blockchain integration we should see an influx of new users from the TRX community. I wouldn't be surprised to see other blockchains being supported in this game going forward..
