RE: Steem Og Update {Day 12}

in #steemog6 years ago (edited)

Its not a new strain if you mate two santa rita together. I've argued with Jon about this a million times. Backcrossing is mating a strain with something in its linage. like Santa rita x inca gold. That would be a new strain. But Jon didnt do that. I wish he would stop calling it a back cross.

P.S Jon agreed Steem og is the same strain as Santa Rita and I could call Steem og a pheno of santa rita.

Sort:

"Backcrossing is a crossing of a hybrid with one of its parents or an individual genetically similar to its parent, in order to achieve offspring with a genetic identity which is closer to that of the parent."

This particular instance was a sibling mating but it is still a form of backcrossing according to this definition. The resulting phenotypes could then be isolated and used to stabilize a NEW strain if needed, but yes it is essentially the same as the SROG plus more of the parent's phenotypes thrown in.

Even though this would create a nearly identical set of phenotypes this COULD still be considered a new strain (aka superstrain).

How is that a new strain and not a new generation of Santa rita?
Phenotypes and strains arent the same thing.

Also that definition of backcrossing totally backs me up.
It has to be two seperate strains. The hybrid and the parent strain.
Again that's NOT what jon did.

It does say "or an individual genetically similar to its parent..."
