I’ve been actively involved in the planting of flowers and trees since 2009. In 2010, I founded @thegreens a youth environmental organization that strives to educate, inspire and engage young people to take action to combat climate change and be at the forefront of biodiversity conservation and waste management.

For over 12 years now, I’ve been planting trees and one of my favorite plants, a plant that I’ve planted in hundreds of thousands is the Weeping Bottlebrush popurlarly known as Callistemon in my community.
I love this ornamental tree so much and its one of the trees I’ve planted in most of the schools in my community.
I like Callistemon because;

  1. It’s a very beautiful ornamental tree. It’s beautiful read flowers are breathtaking.
  2. It’s resistant to drought. Callistemon survives very well during the dry season giving an evergreen and beautiful red flowers display
  3. It’s very insects and bees friendly. You can get sound of bees around the Callistemon always and then if you want to do bird watching, stay around a Callistemon. The bees and birds like the abundant nectar this tree provides all year round.
  4. It’s an excellent windbreak. I’ve planted a lot of Callistemon around schools because they help to shield the wind but one thing is that the gentle whistling sound that generates when the wind blows across these trees is so relaxing.
  5. It’s a medicinal tree.

These are just a few reasons why I like Callistemon so much.

I’ve planted over 200,000 of these tree species via @thegreens in different schools and communities of the my region such as;

  1. Gratitude Bilingual Nursery and Primary School
  2. C.B.C Menda Nkwen
  3. Government Practicing School Ntahsatan
  4. Government High School Mbiame
  5. Government Bilingual High School Mbiame
  6. Government High School Kedjom-Keku
  7. Government Nursery School Nkwen Palace, etc

When we did the tree planting at Government Nursery School Nkwen Palace, the paramount Fon of Nkwen told us the soft buds of Calliestemon can be chewed to cure cough. I tried and this worked and this was a huge source of inspiration for me to keep planting this very special ornamental/medicinal tree.
