Without a proper work space, working at home is overwhelming. Build a better work space to improve concentration, prevent tension and stay on task.

Even if it’s just a small table or a piece of a table, every self-employed professional needs their own work space. Without a proper space, trying to work at home will feel chaotic, disorganized and uncomfortable. Is that any way to conduct business? Everyone who works at home should learn to build a better work space, and better their self-employment experience.

The Work at Home Space

In order to design a work at home space that promotes comfort and productivity, professionals first have to establish a space that’s all their own. That space has to be off-limits to other members of the family. Arrange it well, and turn into an official work at home area.

  • Computer. For a great many self-employed professionals, the computer is the primary work tool. It opens the door to the Internet, and all those emails and all that marketing potential that every work at home professional needs. Keep it front and center of the work space, easy to access and always present.
  • Space. The space itself, like any other space, is capable of evoking certain feelings. A lot of clutter, with items shoved close together, will feel disorganized and overwhelming. Space items apart and keep the whole area streamlined, with less clutter, so it won’t look cramped and confusing.
  • Color. Designers preach color all day long, and there’s plenty of truth to their obsession with it. Certain colors evoke certain moods and emotions. Avoid over-coloring the work at home space by bringing in a lot of mis-matching items of varying color shades. Buy an inexpensive set of desk tools if they’re needed, in matching and complementing colors. Use cool, muted colors to promote relaxation or bold, vivid colors to create a sense of energy and enthusiasm.
  • Height. The desk and the chair, or the table and the chair, should be of the right height. Legs and hands should feel comfortable during work hours. Professionals who have to strain and keep their muscles tense are going to feel irritable, and find it more difficult to work. An adjustable chair is best; this makes it easy to find a comfortable position that can be changed at will.
  • Lighting. Self-employed professionals shouldn’t have to strain to see. Make sure the work at home space is well-lit. Natural light is best, but artificial light should also be in place for dim days. The lighting should be bright, but not so white-hot it burns the eyes.
Professionals who work outside the home take it for granted that they’ll have their own space, an area they can make their own. Work at home professionals deserve the same thing, and they should treat the home office like a special space. Build a better work space, and make being self-employed enjoyable, productive and comfortable.
