Daily Coin# 141 Another Well Worn Victorian Silver Coin

in #steemsilvergold6 years ago (edited)

A new coin introduced in 1848, "the florin" was worth two shillings or one-tenth of a pound. It proved popular and was struck in considerable numbers but it did not displace the half crown or crown. The "Godless" type featured here was an unpopular attempt to simplify the royal titles , was struck 1848-49 only . This 1849 coin was struck of .925 % silver By The Royal Mint in London England . It weighs 11.31 grams and is 28 mm in diameter .
The obverse features a quite different portrait of Queen Victoria known as the Gothic Portrait , it has a young Victoria richly dressed with braided hair and a very ornate looking crown facing to the left , with the simple legend VICTORIA REGINA 1849 . A picture of an AU one and then mine !

The reverse of this beautiful coin shows the 4 crowned cruciform shields of England x 2 , Scotland and Ireland , a rose , a shamrock , a thistle , and another rose fill between the shields . A larger rose in the center . The words ONE FLORIN
ONE TENTH OF A POUND surround all . Again a picture of an AU one and then mine !
