1927 Vermont Half Dollar
The 1927 Vermont half dollar commemorates the 150th anniversary of the founding of Vermont. This coin was designed by Charles Keck. The Vermont half dollar has a mintage of 28,000. The obverse depicts Ira Allen. Ira Allen was a founder of the Vermont Republic. The Vermont Republic was an independent nation before it became a state. Ira Allen is the leader of the Green Mountain Boys, a militia. The Green Mountain Boys fought in many battles during the Revolutionary War. Ira Allen has a brother, Ethan Allen, who was a colonel in the Continental Army. The reverse depicts a cougar. Cougars are known by many names such as mountain lion, puma, panther, and catamount. Contrary to popular belief, cougars are not related to lions or tigers. The cougar's closest relatives are house cats. Cougars lack the ability to roar. Instead cougars growl or purr. Originally, the US Mint intended to make a Vermont gold coin. However, the idea for a Vermont gold coin was rejected. Only silver half dollars were minted. The Vermont half dollar has a high relief design. The cougar looks like it's popping out of the coin!
