Or are we going to defend ourselves in some way and if so, by what means?

Stupidity is our strength! :D

I think we are so stupid as the society that we will keep many technologies (especially in the field of biology) undeveloped for no rational reasons (viva la religion!).

Also, consumer tech will probably be accepted more and more, but we have lost something great and that was the "amateur electronics". During the 80's and early 90's, tech belonged to enthusiasts. Many of them made their own computers!. Now we are depending on big tech companies made by those enthusiasts. And those companies are naturally often idling.

I forgot how old you are, but back in the old ages, every new computer meant the revolution. From B&W to 8 colours to 8-bit colours. Now it's just a bit faster computer.
