RE: The Amateur Mycologist - Random Find - First Ever Earthstar! Geastrum Genus, Probably G.saccatum.
I don't know much about Earthstars because for some strange reason I only find G. triplex, and that's an easy one to ID.
I read Kuo's description of G. saccatum and your specimen checks all the boxes. I don't really understand his description though. When he's talking about the differences between G. fimbriatum and G. saccatum, he says the latter is connected to the ground through a small section and thus it has less debris. Shouldn't it get covered with more soil and debris than if it was attached over a large portion of the mushroom?
Anyways, great piece, as always! I love reading your posts, you get me to study again some species that I haven't seen in ages or I haven't even found. Great way to refresh my mind. Cheers!
Thanks as always @fabulousfungi.
I agree the whole detritus/attachment question is framed sort of strangely by Kuo. A picture would have clarified what he was talking about a lot I think.
But he really seems to get that bit from a much older description. I feel like that kind of loosey goosy characteristic being treated as dispositive is a bit misguided where a number of external influences could affect the amount of dirt on a mushroom.
Anyway, it being the only lingering question mark, I've decided to pay it little heed. :)
