Animal Trivia #1; Some Facts You Didn't Know About Crocodiles
Hi everyone,
As I'm so busy for the past couple of days and might be for the next few days to come, I've decided, instead of letting my blog's content empty for days, I will create a trivia post. This is a short informative post about different kind of animals just to fill in some gaps in between major articles.
Now, let's talk about crocodiles and some facts which you may not know about crocodiles.
Speedy swimmer
This ability is one of the factors that makes this creature one of the scariest predators ever lived. They can swim as fast as 30 miles per hour with the help of their powerful tail. Apart from that, some of their morphological features were designed for them to be a better swimmer. They possessed a streamlined body shape, and while swimming, they tuck their feet at their body side which reduce water resistance. How fast can you swim? Unless you can swim faster than a crocodile, I would avoid swimming in an area which inhabited by them.
They Grew Faster
When a crocodile was born, they were 20 cm at most but gives it a year; it can grow up to 1.5 metres. That was quick, isn't it? Some of the largest species of crocodiles can grow up to 7 metres and weigh approximately 1000 kg.
Sweating Through Skin Is Overrated
Unlike humans or any mammals, crocodile sweats through their mouth. This behaviour can sometimes be seen, when they just stay immobile at the riverside while opening their mouth. It's not a sign of aggression; they just want to cool off their body by perspiring!
They Bite But Never Chew
Even though they are considered polyphyodont, they will never chew. Their teeth which aligned the upper and lower jaw were meant to catch and crush prey. They will swallow their food as a whole.
Their Offspring Were Often Eaten
Well, not by them but by some of the large fish, lizards and even another species of an adult crocodile. This fact is why there were so few of them which caused them to be threatened by extinction. I mean quit eating your young species already.
Their Skin Product Is Of The Highest Quality
Have you ever peek at the price of a wallet with a genuine crocodile skin? They can cost up to 15,000 USD! Poaching or illegal hunting for crocodile's skin has been one of the many issues which threatened the existence of this aquatic creature. Some of the poachers which originated from Brazil, hunt Cayman at night by stabbing their eyes and skin them alive.
Tomorrow, a new animal will be arriving. Excited yet? Find out tomorrow what kind of animals it is.
