Act III, Scene vi

Continued

Horns are heard in the distance as the entrance music of the cardinal begins to play.

The Cardinal knocks on the entrance to the living room.

FLORIO: What, ho, who goes there?
CARDINAL: Sire, we've discovered the perpetrator of this ghastly deed. The man hath confessed! Behold!

GRIMALDI slides onto the stage to stand before FLORIO and DONADO, wearing sunglasses that conceal his eyes.

DONADO gasps.

Donado:It can’t be!

DONADO is now speechless.

It Was Me Who Destroyed Bergetto

GRIMALDI:
IT WAS ME
WHO DESTROYED BERGETTO

BUT I DIDN'T MEAN HIM NO HARM
HE WAS JUST IN THE WAY

ALL I EVER WANTED WAS TO GET THAT SORANZO
FOR MAKING ME INTO A CUCKOLD

THAT COWARD LIKES TO SLEEP AROUND
AND ROMANCE EVERY WOMAN

THERE SHOULD BE A SIEGE UPON HIS SOUL

BUT NO WORRIES
I ACCEPT MY SURRENDER

READY TO PAY FOR THE SORROW
I’VE MADE
IT’S ALL MY FAULT

SO GO AHEAD
AND GIVE ME YOUR BEST
AND LET’S AGREE TO PUT THIS CRIME TO REST

CARDINAL: Citizens of Parma, this incident could not be helped. It is a case of mistaken identity.
Thus, we receive Grimaldi into his holiness's protection.
Let it be so!

GRIMALDI:
IT WAS ME
BUT NOW
I AM FREE

FREE TO ROME
WHERE I’LL GO NOW
TO ENDURE MY FATE

AND ALL I EVER WANTED
WAS TO MAKE YOU SO PROUD
AND MARRY, INHERITING THE CROWN
BUT IT’S... TOO LATE
