I’d like to announce The Summer Steem Workshop which will take place on Saturday, June 24, 2017, 12 pm - 5 pm in the Kansas City, Missouri area and which I will be hosting. The location is about 35 minutes east of Kansas City in a community called Harvest Hills. The exact address is: 194 Oak Hill Cluster Independence, Missouri 64056. Here’s a link to the Wikipedia article about Harvest Hills for those interested. This is an evolving event, and not all details have been decided yet.

I’ve created a Steemit Chat channel #SteemWorkshop if you want to submit your ideas there or have questions for me.

The workshop has 2 main goals:

  1. Introduce Steemit and Busy to people who have never heard of them.
  2. Meet Steemians in person and networking.

If any of you live in the Midwestern states and would like to teach one of the workshop classes, please comment below. @giftedgaia, @full-steem-ahead: we had talked about this, so let me know if you want to do it.)

MAIN AGENDA FOR EVENT

Introduction and overview of Steemit and Busy/Welcome
Eat free lunch about 12:30.
Split up into smaller groups for workshops.
Freeflow time: @jessamynorchard will perform.
Go swimming. For people not interested in swimming, networking/meeting new people.

WHAT I NEED HELP WITH:

  • Steemians who want to lead a workshop class. If so, comment below.
  • Steemians who can help with event: speaking, meal preparation, clean-up, bringing food like: chips, desserts. The lunch will be very simple: rice, beans, sandwiches.
Any additional ideas you have for a workshop topic.

WHAT I CANNOT PROVIDE

  • I don’t have accommodations to offer, so if you’re traveling from out of town, it will be up to you to reserve accomodations.

In order to satisfy a broad range of different people, we will be splitting up into smaller groups to learn more about various topics. We can rotate every 30-40 minutes, so that people can go to different workshops. The idea is to attract different people who all have different needs. Here’s a breakdown of the different workshops and the leaders so far. Each workshop could have several leaders. You could do an Ask Me Anything style of workshop as well. Everything will depend on the number of people who attend. There’s some flexibility with the workshop structure.

The workshops can be either outside or inside. I have a community center reserved so that can be used. FYI, the community center does not have wifi. Ideally, different groups could go outside so that there is less noise.

EVENT DETAILS

Free lunch after the welcome presentation. And then after we eat, we'll split up into various workshop groups which can rotate after 30-40 minutes. After that, @jessamynorchard will be singing/acoustic guitar. After this, people can go swimming in the community pool if they want. They are also free to leave at any time. I reserved the pool for our group, but there will also be people from the community using it.

A word about the community where the event will be held and its design:

The community hosting this event is called Harvest Hills. It’s a Christian community and therefore comes with a number of rules. The pool has rules as well, and the main ones are no smoking or drinking inside the pool area. There’s no lifeguard, so you’ll be responsible for yourself and/or kids. Drugs are not allowed as this community is not a hippie commune or anything like that. Imagine how you would conduct yourself if you visited an Amish community. Harvest Hills is not Amish, but anyway, you get the idea. It’s an intentional community and I will be responsible for all guests. I want to be as straightforward as possible about this in order to avoid problems. If you’re wanting to party, get drunk, etc., this is not the event for you. I was granted permission to use the church community center only after I spoke to the church leaders and they learned what Steemit is about.

About Harvest Hills:

The land in the center of the circle of houses, as well as the woods surrounding Harvest Hills is owned by the church and not individuals. This kind of communal ownership of land creates a sort of unity that could not be accomplished otherwise. People are free to start their own gardens on the communal land in designated areas. There’s also a barn that is currently not being used. At one time there were horses living in the barn.

It contains many earth-homes called Terra-Domes and Dome Homes that were built over 30 years ago.

Most of the houses are situated in a circle and in the middle is a playground for children. The reason for it being built in a circle was to encourage communication and also provide a way for parents to help each other watch kids, who are usually playing in the middle of the circle.

During the workshops, the kids can play in the central playground while the workshop is going on outside, within the playground area. This way parents can learn while their kids are playing within sight.

If you're interested in helping at this event, please let me know. I won't be able to do it on my own. I am also probably going to create an Eventbrite listing so that I know how many intend to go. I think 75 people is about the limit for this since the community center is not that big. I think tagging it as #steemworkshop on social media would be a good idea. Also, I was thinking of building a website with all the information.....hmmm...

ps- if anyone has a better tagline for 'WHY" on the flier, put your ideas below.

Thanks, I hope it is a success. I haven't organized anything in a long time, so please be patient......

Sort:

this is great! I might participate :D

That would be really cool!!!!!
I'm networking with some local Bitcoin and Blockchain people to get more exposure for this....

This should be bold font:

What I like about it the most, is how you explained steemit to church leaders and now they know about steemit too. :)

It's also a great example of how to have steemit meetups in Anywhere, USA. You might be starting an awesome trend. GREAT IDEA STELLABELLE!!

Yeah! I have to face my fears, as I've become quite afraid of organizing events for some reason.....my self-help gurus say that magic lies on the other side of fear............are you anywhere close to Missouri??????
My main fear involves too many people showing up (like over 100....) and then running out of lame sandwiches. I'm also sort of afraid of people just going off into the woods to get high, and then getting in trouble! The end result of disorderly guests would be that they wouldn't allow me to have events anymore out here. There's no hiding anything, unfortunately and fortunately.

If I was within driving distance (and not aircraft distance), I'd consider going. Way too far away from me.

We should guess how many people would show. I bet you'll probably get 10 as a minimum, and as much as 35 as a maximum. You'll probably end up with 20 steemians (this doesn't include any of your local friends, family or people you already know) After the event, tell me if I was right?

To far for me, wish I could come. Hope you all have a brill time. Stay safe :)

Nice . Is this home seems different shape

They are round. No corners whatsover, including the windows.

Such as the ancient people called housing (tent) Thanks @stellabelle

If I'm here, I'll be sure to help out. It depends on my race schedule and family obligations. Sounds like a blast!

great! I hope you can attend!

Cool. Sounds fun. Unfortunately it's a little far for me to attend :(

That's a great poster. I hope it turns out to be a great event. With the group of you that met at your earlier Ozark Meetup, it should be a great success. If you think too many people would come, you could have a registration, I guess. How will people be able to sign up on Steemit at the workshop, if there's not Wifi. Could someone use their phone as a wifi hub? That way, folks at the workshop can sign up and make their first posts. Here's to everyone's success with this -- great example for the rest of us!

Well, the idea is to really inspire people to understand and want to post on Steemit. I could host one group at our house, for people who want to join....

Best of luck! The Kansas City area is close enough to folks in Nebraska and Iowa, too. So you might get some Steemians from there, like @countryinspired or @etcmike.

cool! if only private messaging existed.....

haha -- nope, folks just have to chase each other down in their posts, out in the open!

it's called Busy

I've very interested. Let me figure somethings out & i'll get back to you M'am!

okay, great.....we have some time, but I would guess that Midwestern Steemians are a rare breed....how many of us are there, do you think?
